Before I get started, I'm just going to give my brief background playing Destiny so if you're interested, keep reading, if not, skip to paragraph 4.
So I've been a long time fan of Bungie, especially in the Halo days. I picked up Destiny a week after it was released and I was obsessed. Now as the years go by, I find myself deleting my characters and then restarting the game just so I can enjoy grinding again.
Now I live in South Africa which isn't very populated when it comes to Destiny players but there's definitely a few of us still playing. I originally started this game on XBOX ONE. After The House of Wolves DLC, I noticed some serious issues with regards to matchmaking. I noticed I was red barring majority of the game no matter how many games of crucible I played, some moments I was red barring and others I was green but it would be terribly inconsistent. I therefore decided to switch from XBOX to PS4 because at that time, PS4 definitely had more console sales in South Africa so therefore made the switch, assuming I'd find more local games (that's how dedicated I was to playing Destiny).
Cutting the long story short, switching to a console that had a larger player base had no benefit when it comes to Destiny. Now when it comes to any other game, Call of Duty, Overwatch or even Battlefield (which runs off of servers), these games performed perfectly, even though with Battlefield, I play on servers that are situated in Europe with over 180ms ping and yet I still feel like I can have a great game without the negative effects of lag.
So what is going on with the matchmaking in Destiny? Isn't connection a priority when it comes to finding a game? Or does the SBMM take effect over a local game? Why do I find myself struggling to just play a single game of crucible without obsessive amounts of lag from my side and the enemy side? It's getting to the point where I can't expect to be competitive playing one of my most favorite games to date because I'm dying behind walls. I skim through every game just barely getting a positive KD.
So what has Bungie done? Halo never had an issue, nor does Battlefield and those are international games I end up matchmaking in. If there's anyone having the same issue, let me know because I'd love to know how prominent these issues are and whether or not we can get Bungie's attention so they can correct this in Destiny 2.
Please note: My ports are all forwarded due to the fact that I've placed my console's IP address into a DMZ which means I've got no firewall or any firmware blocking Destiny from having a good connection through my router.
