Keyboard and Mouse in Destiny?...Enlighten Me

I know nothing about keyboard and mouse in destiny. Im hearing alot about people proudly saying they use a keyboard and mouse in pvp. Im not trying to start an argument but im trying to understand if this is legit and not against ps4 or bungie rules. Kb+m users always say the movement is the same so they dont have an advantage but doesnt a mouse allow u to aquire your target much faster and stay on target more consistently? Is it not just a point and shoot setup with a mouse cuz i dont know? On controllers u have to really finesse the sticks in unison so it is tricky and takes a ton a practice to be good at it. I have no interest in using a kb+m setup but im baffled by it because Im hearing it is a major advantage in pvp and the people using it say its not sooo...please enlighten me. First off Is it legal to use in Destiny and on PS4? Second How does it give an advantage and/or why does it not? Explain how the shooting mechanic works? In my eyes if it is point and click shot than that seems like a massive advantage alone. From arguments ive read about it seems it may be a huge advantage against console controllers. LMK...educate me please. Im a controller user and always will be but Id like to know what im facing in the crucible cuz sometimes some guardians seem unreasonably good...lol

  • There are half and half setups out there that wreck on console. You can have the ease of movement on your left hand with a half controller and a mouse aiming on the right hand. Many PC players moved their setup to console for the division and it broke the game entirely. Being able to have the speed of full strafe and holding a great deal of accuracy with the fine tuning of a 🐁 give you plenty of headshots while never having to ads

  • The max turn acceleration in this game is locked to the max sensitivity of 10 in game. That means that native mouse movement is not possible in this particular game, and is at a significant disadvantage over a controller. As a longtime PC competitive gamer I'll admit that k&m will always beat a controller if the game supports full acceleration though.

  • Good or even great pc players will become console gods when using a kbm setup. Average pc players, you would never even notice them in game.

  • i look at it this way, if the console/game doesn't offer direct support for the input device, you shouldn't be using it. if you shouldn't be using it, it would be considered cheating. many people will argue racing wheels for racing games could fall into this category, but, the games themselves offer direct support for wheels.

  • I had surgery on my right thumb and I have to use a mouse and keyboard. Do I feel it gives a advantage? No.

  • I havent tried k&m for console myself, but i imagine with todays technical progress its not too different from using k&m on pc except for ingame mechanics such as aim assist. Therefor i think its kind of cheap playing competitively on console with k&m. Destiny is and will never be a truly competitive game though - its a fun and casual shooter. Not more. K&m is way better for fps games. Especially having a mouse instead of a stick. It allows extremely fast 180s or 360s while you are still very accurate close up. I might also make the assumption-although i never tried myself(!!)- that the aim assist isnt that big of a deal for k&m since the hitboxes in general are fairly big. Tl;dr : k&m definitely has the advantage over controller for fps. I dont mind ppl who use it outside of competitive areas (destiny is not a competitive game) but using k&m and bragging about stats or sth like that is silly.

  • I purchased a Xim4 and gave it a go, it last 2 days and I returned it. Give me a pad any day, I just found it too hard to move around the map.

I've played both m+kb and controller and I prefer the controller by a long shot, it feels more natural and movement is a lot better with controller. Any advantage gained from m+kb is offset by aim assist so controller is usually the better option unless you have arthritis or something which makes it harder to play the pad.

Everyone is using Hori mouse and keyboards, their hand cannon shota basically never misses, and nothing beats hand cannons at mid range. That is OP and cheating in my point of view. I was gonna buy one for around 100usd but realized it was too cheap. Now i am getting pounded by them in trials

      • I suggest visiting dr lupo's stream. (His YouTube might already have a video on this but I'm not 100% sure!) amazing guy, amazing player (always carrying kids to he lighthouse) and an avid m & k player. He is forced to play controller for the official destiny tourneys but prefers controller you can ask him why. Guy is an amazing person and would gladly help.
hes also a huge tech nerd from what I understand so he would definitely know anything you needed to know on that regard but idk if he will go all super in depth mid trials stream because he would probably lose some viewers/his own concentration
hope he can help :-)

      • I use xim 4 with a red Dragon mechanical keyboard and razor deathadder essential mouse. Yes keeping track of your target is easier, but stay out of close range lol. To be effective with M & K, you can't go higher than a 1/2 ratio. That means 1 inch mouse movement equals 2 inch movement on screen. Which around 6-7 sensitivity on a controller. Most pro players run a 1/1 ratio because it's more intuitive. Yes it is possible to bypass the games sensitivity.... and by a crazy amount. Imagine a 30 sensitivity on COD BO3 (It's possible to do with xim 4). However ppl don't up the sensitivity too high because you things like jitter which can cause headaches and hellish strain on the eyes, not to mention skipping pixels. Which means accurately shooting anything is next to impossible. Using M & L has it's ups and downs, make no mistake. It's just a preference. Like some the Xbox controller over the PlayStation controller and vice versa. To anyone who says using a mouse is like cheating are either jealous or simply ignorant. People that have played and fps on keyboard and mouse know the pro and cons and would say it's fine. There's a reason it isn't against the Xbox ToS lol.

        • From what I've read in past topics, aquiring the target may be easier with a m&k but it doesn't make the cursor/reticle move any faster than the games sensitivity setting allows.

It's allowed. It doesn't break the terms of service of either PSN or xboxlive. Also: even if it wasn't allowed it is completely undetectable because it uses a normal controller as a translator. So it's a moot point really.

            • Destiny is not programmed to take advantage of a keyboard and mouse, so anything that you use that allows you to connect a keyboard and mouse won't function as well as a PC game that is designed to use them. The demos that I've seen of keyboard and mouse in use on destiny made it look like it was extremely difficult to do some of the most basic tasks.
