JUST EXPLAIN TO ME WHAT THE HELL THE TRAVELER IS BUNGIE[THEORY]
Yeah hey hi it's BraveCole
Look. I'm a huge lore enthusiast and It [b][i]urks[/i][/b] me that after the two or three years this game has been out, we still don't know [b][i]exactly[/i][/b] what the -blam!- the traveler is.
We [b][i]know[/i][/b] it's something that brought a golden age. We know it's something that has the power to terraform planets, and we know that something has been after it, The Darkness. Which caused the collapse.
We call it the Travler. The Fallen called it The Great Machine. It's reconciled as a -blam!-ing God.
But [b][i] what exactly is it!?[/i][/b]
It's been around for millions of years, spreading life and prosperity wherever the hell it goes. -blam!-ing awesome, right? Totally!
But here, have a look at Ghost Fragment: The Traveler.
[spoiler]Dreams of Alpha Lupi
You have lived as invisibly as possible, flicking from solar system to solar system, making grand plans, overseeing the culturing of civilizations, before leaving in a blink. But you have no recollection of ever wanting worship or even thanks from those blessed by you.
But memory is heavy now.
It feels like lead and neutronium and electroweak matter fashioned into a moon-sized ball that you must carry as you move.
Now, your flight is rapid, your vast mind infected with such dread and toxic doubt that you find yourself afraid of the simple act of thought.
And it is your children you must turn to now, in time of need.[/spoiler]
Dreams of Alpha Lupi. Alpha Lupi is also considered to be the Traveler, but in every Alpha Lupi card, it's always in third person. Does the traveler talk in third person? Or could Alpha Lupi be someone else entirely?
Take a look at this quote too from the same card:
"It feels like lead and neutronium and electroweak matter fashioned into a moon-sized ball that you must carry as you move."
"Lead and neutronium and electroweak matter fashioned into a moon-sized ball."
Now, what other moon sized ball exists in the Destiny universe besides the Traveler?
Noticed that it also says "fashioned into". Meaning that The Traveler that we see over the last city was possibly [i]created. By someone.[/i]
And when I say [i]by someone,[/i] the quote follows up by saying "that you must carry as you move."
Could this mean that the Traveler itself isn't the God, but someone or [i]something[/i] inside of that metal ball is the [i]true[/i] traveler?
Could the thing over the last city simply be a construct, container, or even a ship or vehicle of some sort, housing an unseen entity or deity?
Let me know if my crazy, off the wall theory sounds plausible.
Edit: After studying the Grimoire some more, Ghost Fragment: Mysteries 2 could also give some insight.

3 RepliesEdited by megatron pants: 5/18/2017 1:59:41 AMAlso, on a semi unrelated note, ghosts, as we all know, have interchangeable shells, therefore the triangular shaped pieces that make up its shell aren't the ghost itself, basically it's just it's clothing, so, a ghost is a mini metal ball. Servitors, like ghosts, were created by the traveler (or at least prime servitors like Sepiks) and servitors are also metal balls, just bigger than a ghost. So I think that the traveler made the ghosts with the same general design as the servitors. Also, servitors create ether which keep the fallen alive, and the ghosts keep guardians alive with light. Both ghosts and servitors teleport aswell. Another thing (that's not actually proof but I just wanted to add) is that in the S.A.B.E.R. 3 strike, once you beat the boss, the ghost says something and sometimes, that something is "I wonder if I'd be more useful with a larger chassis?" And a servitor is more effective than a ghost, shooting giant orbs of purple energy, buffing all nearby fallen, masking signals, having cool theme music (Sepiks perfected), having more health (presumably, since ghosts can't actually die in gameplay, but some flavour text indicates that ghost take a single shot from a shotgun or somethings to die)

The description of the Traveler Mask is saying that Fenchurch Everis (I think he's Tess Everis's dad or something) went inside the traveler, so I'm pretty sure there's not something in it, unless it's hidden.

Bungie have a habit of involvin' Dyson Spheres into their worlds, so I wouldnt be surpremely surprised if the Traveller's exterior hides a new world, a new enemy...[spoiler]Didact was constructed by Bungie[/spoiler]

The traveler was made by someone with the purpose to defeat the Darkness. It uses TARDIS tech to have over 1,000,000 stars inside it to power it. It spreads it's 999,999 stars of power in what we call [I]Light[/I].

I'm under the impression that the traveler is some kind of ship/transport vessel that houses a being or AI. This being has incredibly advanced technology that has the ability to 'shape life' wherever it goes. I also think the traveler houses some kind of weapon that was originally used to stop a slightly less evolved form of 'the darkness' at the collapse, but that had a huge impact on all surrounding life as well. Now the Traveler seems to be using new tactics in its fight against 'the darkness' by creating an incredibly powerful human/undead army in the form of the guardians. It's probably no accident that the traveler is now settled with humanity. Triggering the collapse and its own demise was most likely done at a key location. It's looking for something.

2 RepliesThis makes sense. Although, according to the description of the traveler mask, fenchurch everis has been inside of it, and apparently, it smells of vanilla. Although, this can be taken with a grain of salt as it is coming from one of the people who runs eververse soooooo.... yeah. [spoiler]or it could mean that fenchurch evereis is the true god in the destiny universe and that buying silver is the only way to ascend into activision godhood. [/spoiler]

There is nothing inside the traveler as far as we know, although I may have missed something. The only recorded time someone was inside the traveler was Tess everis's uncle (I think). "I've been inside the traveler once, smelled of faint vanilla" (that may not be the correct wording, I'm doing this from my memory). So if he's been inside the traveler then there must not be anything too notable in there. At least that's what I think, if anyone has any thing I didn't see I'd love to see it.

We don;t know, because Bungie does not know. The original story was scrapped back before release. My guess is that Destiny 2 will be when we actually start to get some semblance of a coherent narrative.

The traveler is a [i]machine[/i]. It was definitely created as you allude to. I hope destiny 2 and the "10 year" story arc expand on the nature of what the traveler is, but then expand into the powers/beings that made it (the sky) and their purpose.
