Which of the three main Borderlands was the best?

Borderlands 1

41

Borderlands 2

431

Borderlands The Pre Sequel

28

What did you like about each one that made them stand out to you? Personally, I have a mix between 2 and TPS.

  • Borderlands 2 is the best. I do have to say the first game is worth going back to though due to it's different identity. It leaned more towards being a western and the humor was much more dry and wasn't as full of memes and pop culture references. Now I actually will say I think 2 has more personality and was a better direction to take for the franchise to take in the end. And I don't think the game has lost its roots or anything. But it is neat going back to the first game to see the differences.

    • Wow, kinda feel in the minority now as I prefer the first game. I can't exactly pin it down why I prefer Borderlands 1 over 2 as theoretically 2 should be the superior game. The graphics are improved, it introduced memorable new characters, environments are more varied, theres new weapon types and the character skills are better thought out and more fun to use. However the Borderlands series to me has always been about two things, the shooting and the looting; and I feel like Borderlands 2 fundamentally failed on both these aspects especially when compared to the original. The shooting felt subpar mainly because of the ridiculous enemy scaling. You'd find a weapon at the appropriate level and it would do well against enemies; however give it a level or two and then it suddenly becomes useless and you're back to struggling until you can find the next gun. This only got worse as more difficulty levels were added such as the OP Levels but I'll discuss more of that later. In Borderlands 1, the enemies didn't scale to the levels it does in 2; you could find a gun and have it continue to be effective even way past it's level. An example of this would be a Combustion Hellfire I found at level 14, I continued to use it all the way up until the Destroyer and it still melted enemies. This may just be due to it being a Combustion motherf*cking Hellfire (which we all know is borderline OP in Borderlands 1) however the same still applies to most other weapons to a lesser extent. The looting is the main thing that got me about this game. In the first game, legendaries dropped a bit more frequently and from more sources; this helped the journey through the game to continue smoothly and getting a legendary randomly from a chest was a great feeling. In Borderlands 2 though, most legendary weapons were given designated boss drop locations which meant you were very unlikely to get a legendary unless it dropped from a boss and even then you know what you're going to get unless it's your first time playing through the game. Making the bosses drop designated legendaries kinda took the random element/surpise of getting a weapon from a boss and just made the game feel grindy as a result. It was annoying farming a boss for a particular item for an extended period of time, levelling up and having the item become near obsolete and then have to go and farm for a new weapon all over again. Going back to the OP Levels, Borderlands 2 annoys me in the fact that you need a specific setup at the higher difficulties if you still want to do well. Some characters like Axton even become irrelevant at the higher levels of play because his ability and skills just scale worse. All I'll say is if you're not a Gunzerker running the Grog Nozzle, good luck because you'll need it.

    • I thought TPS was the best, true It wasn't as funny and didn't have as much content as 2, and the jump pads were stupid, and the maps were too big, but the Oz kits were awesome, the story was better, and the weapon balance was SO much better, in 2 at OP 8 to really do work without cheating u almost had to play as gunserker with very few guns still being viable, and the bee shield was almost required

Kind of worrying so many picked 2; first one will always be the best due to originality.

        • For game play and story I preferred 2. But TPS was the funniest to me. I loved playing as the doppleganger and his lines were some of the funniest things I've heard since bulletstorm.

        • The first one, the second one seemed more about memes than story. The third one was weird as all hell… couldn't get into either 2 or Prequel.

        • "...For example; This one guy in New Haven. People are dying left and right and all of sudden this jackhole rushes at me with a spoon. A FREAKIN SPOON! And I'm dying laughing, right? So I scoop his stupid little eyeballs out with it and his kids are there all crying like WAAHHHH! And he can't see where he's going, he's runnin' into stuff and... hahaha! Oh man... I dunno, maybe you had to be there. Anyway... the moral of the story is you're a total bitch." Borderlands 2 was a thing of beauty

                • I had fun with the first one, but the second one was my favorite. Was -blam!-ing hilarious, loved almost every second of it (a few instances annoyed me, but more because people i was playing with or other shit) Didnt like TPS all that much tbh

                • TPS was okay, and between B1 and B2 the biggest difference was the handsome jack. One of the best villains of all time imo. Even though i enjoyed the B1 playable characters more, i think B2 takes the cake

                • Borderlands 1: The main hate borderlands 1 gets is due to its mini map which isn't a mini map at all but a scrolling compass. If people learned to use it and opened their in menu maps, than the game would not face the criticism it does. The game is best played with two people because the scrolling compass becomes the biggest problem when driving. This is solved by player two sitting in the menu looking at the map telling the driver where to go. Which can and has lead to some hilarious deaths and bickering. Borderlands 1 has the best characters! All 4 characters are extremely powerful in end game and feel so unique and fun to play. The loot system is also different. Drop rates on legendary items are not limited to one boss for a certain weapon they can be obtained from anything (excluding dlc weapons). This allows you to kill what ever you want as well as being able to play on any character you want which cannot be said for bl2 on op8. As well as the dlc all being pretty good. Borderlands 2: amazing game as well. I have about 37 days of time played in game across all characters thanks to the abysmal drop rates on skins. The first three dlcs were ok but tiny Tina's dlc was a master piece. The story is ok in this game but what really makes it stand out is end game. The grind, mobbing, and boss fights are fun in end game a lot of fun. When the level cap was originally 50 the game was amazing every character was strong and really fun to play, but as level cap rose majority of the classes fell off. That's what hurt this game. TPS: short story but the characters are really fun to level and are all really powerful end game and leveling. The loot system is ok the drop rates on most legendary weapons is good. This games major issue is its non existent end game. Yes there are some bosses you can re fight but a good amount of them will not drop their skin or head unless you are doing their quest, so you have one shot to get it unless you restart your game on console. The other bad thing about the game is there is not a single end game mobbing area that is fun. Enemy's are to spread out it sucks. All in all this is an amazing series worth picking up and falling in love with for yourself. It is also a good series to try and get your significant other to play with you if they are remotely interested in playing video games with you.

                  • Ive never played them but i did scoop up the Handsome collection. So I tried Borderlands 2 as Salvador and became bored way to fast. Now I've restarted as Kreig and I'm enjoying it but I'm at level 30 and starting to play it less and less. Should I try a new class or does it start to improve?
