Sad Shows & Music

What is your opinion on sad and/or otherwise emotional and sentimental shows and music? Some people think it's lame and corny. Some people avoid it because they don't like feeling sad. Some people love feeling emotional, whether it be sad or sentimental. How do you feel about sad and sentimental shows and music?

  • Personally, I love emotional shows, movies and music. I get so much more into whatever it is I'm watching or listening to when my emotions get involved. Many of my favorite shows and songs are quite emotional. I enjoy feeling sad, angry or excited for a character or person. I can connect with that character much better when I can empathize with them emotionally. And when I feel emotional over something that happens in a show or game, I feel more alive. Perhaps it's because I don't express too much emotion in my regular day-to-day life, and so being given a reason to express that emotion is a release of sorts. There are few moments in this life more pleasurable than the intense feeling of simple happiness that wells up in you immediately after crying over something very emotional. I watch the shows I watch just so that I may enjoy that feeling again.

  • A large majority of the time, they both do absolutely nothing for me. Hachiko (too lazy to see if I spelled that correctly) is the only movie I cried a bit when watching just as School Days is the only show that has gotten me to cry. As for music, I can acknowledge that a song is sad, but that's about it. That said, a week or two ago, I was listening to a song that I've listened to many times before and towards the end of the song I just broke down and started crying for no understandable reason... Maybe it was 'cause of all the stuff that I had been thinking about previously, but I don't know.

    • I appreciate the use of sad music or sad situations when appropriate and genuine. When emotions like sadness are conveyed well enough, the work (be it movie, TV show, etc.) can connect with you much better, and make it higher quality. Example: Several scenes in The Last of Us. I still cry during that opening sequence. When it is not well done, it makes the work appear cheesy and unrelatable, downgrading the quality

    • I guess I must like it, since I start watching so many things knowing it's going to be sad

    • Art is the expression of emotion. Bounding it to one emotional polarity is simply corrupt.

      • Sometimes it's a home run hitter. You can become overwhelmed with emotions, especially during a film. That being said though, it's hella hard for me to watch a movie that I know is a sad movie. It could be overdone, but if it's done right, can be really memorable. Sad music...honestly, the best music/art/poems I have ever written have been when I was sad. I have made songs while happy as well, but they aren't very good. To me, it has to do with the limitations of expressing sadness vs happiness in my own experiences. Generic songs about breakups tend to sick though most times.

      • If the show is intentionally supposed to be sad, or if drama is used that actually makes sense in the plot and is portrayed by good actors, then sad shows can be enjoyable

      • If art can stir up any emotion in the recipient then it is good art.

      • Mozart's Requiem. Beautiful piece of music, and was written about his dead wife so it's pretty sad.
