Unless Mara Sov isn't really whom she seems to be, Queen of the Reef. She is quite the mysterious character. She has a coven, and powers well beyond any other awoken. Not to mention the awoken are her "adopted" family.
"I remember everything about the day I was born. I still bear the scars. The Awoken are my family now. And I am their Queen."
P.S
I'm very interested in who Eris is working for/with. Be it Mara Sov, Savathûn.....or other. Although say Mara Sov is Savathûn ( not saying this is so). Since we left Oryx's "power" unclaimed. Could she try to claim it for Savathûn? Considering Savathûn is extremely cunning, and very patient.

That quote may be referring to the event that changed the Awoken. She could've been touched by whatever changed them in a more intimate way than other Awoken. She could be a first generation Awoken, and became their Queen as generations passed. It'd certainly explain her powers, at least.

Of course, that is entirely possible. Although with her techeuns, harbingers and her other powers...I don't believe that her simply being an Awoken is the answer

The Harbingers themselves could've been the power that changed Mara Sov. They could've been what changed the entire Awoken race. It seems that their power does have limits, though, as Oryx was able to repel them. But again, it's all very hush hush and mysterious. I sincerely hope the enigmas that are the Awoken are more addressed in Destiny 2.

One thing we know from Varik's card is that the Awoken are somehow closely affiliated with the Nine. And not willingly, if Xûr is to be believed.
