I wasn't here to try and debate anything, but some of the points you've brought up need adressing. This is all according to my perspective that the earth is spherical, but it is also based on physics and first-hand observation.
Why the ground doesn't move beneath you when you jump? Same reason you don't fly off of a moving vehicle such as a cruise ship. Inertia. Momentum. Besides, the rotation is very slow. It takes nearly 24 hours.
The coriolis effect only affects objects that have to travel great distances due to the aforementioned slow rotation. If a sniper in the armed forces had to make a 2 kilometer shot and told their CO that they dont believe in coriolis and refused to account for it, they'd be out on their ass faster than you can say "flat."
Planes that have to fly south or north actually do have to account for the rotation. If they just pointed at their destination and took off, they'd miss. Correct for rotation, then take off? They arrive on point. I don't know if planes that fly west get there faster, but I'm sure it's a bit faster, yes, as the atmosphere doesn't rotate as fast as the earth, but it does. Think of spinning a cup of water. Perhaps we should look into this further. But remember, the Earth is large and rotates slowly. Expecting to see it rotate is a bit...I don't know the word.
As for disappearing over the horizon, you need to travel quite far for that to be apparent. A few miles won't cut it due to the unique way our atmosphere deals with light. Your mention of the canal experiment failed to mention a later bet where another man did indeed prove that the boats being visible was due to this bending of light.
The scientific method works only when you're not trying to verify something you already believe. If you want the Earth to be flat or round, your results will somehow support it.
All that aside, maybe commercial spaceflight will become commonplace later in our lifetime. Then we can see for ourselves. I'd be interested to see irrefutable evidence though. I've only ever seen Flat-Earth theorists put forward biased and low quality evidence. I'm sure you've got a really good argument somewhere, otherwise this theory wouldn't be so prevalent.

This is a well worded and thoughtful response. I really didn't expect to see that today. lol

I wonder if ifarted69 will see this.

Since when is 1,000mph considered slow?

Edited by Surprised Brony: 12/18/2016 11:18:55 AMWhen the object in question is as large as the earth. You have to also understand that you're moving just as fast, so relatively (to us) speaking, it isn't moving at all. Naturally the inertia dampens the effect so much so that an object has to be disconnected from the rotational inertia for quite some time for the effect to become apparent. And the atmosphere does rotate with us. Only slightly slower. That's why the effect is so small. If the atmosphere didn't, then we'd see some drastic effects, like most Planar theorists say we should. This is all according to Spherical Earth logic and physics, keep in mind. If that's not your belief, then I am spouting fanatical nonsense in your eyes. :3 Side note: If the Earth was flat, the laws of physics would also be wrong, due to their reliance on the Heliocentric/Spherical model. While they aren't full-proof, they haven't let us down so far. Planar theory encompasses more than just the shape of our world. I hope most Flat-Earth supporters know that. I haven't fully researched their theories and history, so I don't know if they have accounted for that detail or not.

This response was awesome!

Thanks! :3

Fuuuuuck, go proselytize over there. OP was panning for interested folks, not disciples.

Ah, don't worry. I forgot to mention that I thought the weapon idea was a decent and well put together concept by the OP. My off-topic portion was the meat of the post, so I didn't remember my intention to congratulate them on their idea. It has a wonderful historical background and would be an interesting nod to the diverse beliefs of the past in the Destiny universe. That said, you may remove that shining white armor, friend. I'm not here to derail the thread. Apologies to the OP if it came across that way.

I spend so much time with my kids, when I'm around actual people I start throwing as much cap outta my mouth as I can, and almost none of it makes sense.
