The Darkness can set you free, because there are no rules but your own. You are not bound by sentiments or meaningful things like protecting others or preserving life. From Oryx' perspective these things are shackles. The Darkness allows you to to dismiss all these shackles and do what you want.
But this is Oryx' will. What he will do is remove your own will and instill his own within you. So the only thing you want to do is live according to his will however you please. In a way, this freedom is an illusion.
In terms of whether or not the Darkness is all that bad, remember that they wish to push the universe into an end state where the only beings alive are the strongest, and everyone else no longer exists. And that is definitely bad.

Is it though? Sure sounds like evolution and survival of the fittest to me. Considering how many Hive and Taken I've slayed, I'm pretty sure we are more fit, and will survive. Does that make me a monster?

Survival of the fittest is natural, yes. Which means it is neutral. However, the Darkness pushes this to its absolute extreme. We are on the opposite extreme, where the strong support the weak in a loving community. We care about life. They do not. Life is meaningless to them if it is not capable of surviving. And the only way to prove you can survive is to prove that others can't survive. I don't know what you would call that, but that for me, at the very least, is not good.
