Currently, using a high-impact shotgun is the defacto strategy, rather than a choice that carries consequences with it. Paired with a medium rate-of-fire hand cannon (palindrome) or one of the faster firing pulse-rifle archetypes (hawksaw, clever dragon) a player has most of his or her engagement scenarios covered, and this is due to a serious lack of utility seen across many weapon archetypes of their respective general classes. Sniper rifles are reserved for small-team-tactics and ambush stategies, pushed out of their roles of long range harassment for the most part by the aforementioned pulse archetypes. Fusion rifles (with the exception of Saladin's Vigil and its closely related high-impact fusion archetype) are no longer effective at covering middle-ranges. The previous medium range generalist weapons, those being lower rate-of-fire auto-rifles and pulse rifles of the red-death archetype, are also wholly ineffective at putting pressure on players wielding a high rate-of-fire pulse that can simply out DPS them with their questionable ranged damage fall off, low recoil, and high spam capability. In close range, a player's options are limited to shotguns, which offer the most consistency relative to sidearms, which are effective only slightly outside of a matador's range, or most fusion rifles, which are much less forgiving. There needs to be a variety of options for the most common combat scenarios in Destiny to keep things fresh, and to give each choice a player makes about his/her loadout the weight they require.
