TLDR: Curious guardians really like the Thorn, use the Thorn, share more Thorns with friends, take up the title of Dredgen.
--
Did anyone else know that, basically, Dredgen Yor has his own sort of cult following? Not that he wanted it. But apparently two guardians, Orsa Zyre and Teben Grey, took Thorn and Dredgen a bit too curiously. Even donning themselves titles of Dredgen. And some other friends who aren't cool enough to be a Dredgen, I guess.
In fact, as their names became more known, and their Thorns more felt, guardians that used Thorn were actively monitored. The aforementioned guardians were most closely followed ones, and the most famous for the trend.
Not that any of this is hard to figure out. But it's just cool to see. And if someone sees it otherwise or has another opinion I would be happy to hear it.

[u.1:01] We were facing a full squad. I recognized a couple of them—Orsa, Teben—but they were different. Decked out in dark gear and set to intimidate. I took it as an attempt at psychological warfare— up the creep factor in a creepy place. But it was more than that. They had changed.

This card shows who Dredgen Vale and Dredgen Bane are. Both from record and indirectly from word of mouth. It doesn't say specifically they used the Thorn but it does show that they stood out from the others by looking surprisingly menacing. But it felt like more than looks. As if they weren't completely normal in the head either. It is also put under the 'Thorn' attachment, or association, with Thorn.

[u.1:01] I’m assuming you’re aware of the events on Mars.
[u.2:01] The results from Blind Watch?
[u.1:02] Yes. It may be starting again. Not saying it is, but we need to keep an eye on any who would seek to retrace Yor’s path.
[u.2:02] Agreed. But Orsa and his friends seem to have contained what Yor could not.
[u.1:03] A dangerous assumption. The Thorn’s pestilence is becoming commonplace.
--
This flat out says that Orsa and his friends are using forged Thorns; they must be forged if they have multiples. Notice, also, that Orsa is either not known or not mentioned to have changed his name. So this could be when they first get up to speed and embracing their new weapon.

[u.1:01] Never seen anything like it. Orsa... or Vale. Whatever he calls himself. Coming out on top wasn’t even in his plans. He’d just drop us then leave our Crests scattered around the combat zone. I don’t think he collected one. Others didn’t care. Figured it gave them a chance to pull the win. But I cared. Win or not, that kinda cocky ain’t healthy.
[u.2:01] I don’t think “cocky” is the right word.
--
This one shows more of a personality view of Orsa, who again, is now known to be going by either Vale or Dredgen Vale; most likely the latter. This helps the first card I put up, showing how their use of Thorn may not be as safe as it seems. While they are not insane, yet, they are certainly not doing what normal guardians do either.
Now they're ignoring objectives and going for a long match since they aren't getting points, I suppose, in order to get as many kills with Thorn as possible. They're also dressing menacingly, in the other card, and seeming a little disturbed.

[u.1:01] I’m telling you this now, because you don’t seem to be taking it seriously.
[u.2:01] We are aware of—and share—your concerns and are monitoring. It could be you’re too close to the situation to get a clear, full view.
[u.1:02] Too close? I’ve seen the vids from Widow’s Court. They’re playing with death.
--
No direct link to Thorn other than the attachment in the file. But this reinforces the monitoring of Thorn users, like I said earlier. Obviously the two onlookers are not pleased by this trend.
I want to say that one of the speakers, the second one, in this card is Ikora Rey as she would match a Warlock that is a Vanguard Designate. I'm not sure who the first one would be though. Either a crucible player who fought a Dredgen title or someone higher up like a crucible handler, or a seasoned guardian. A Hunter of some sorts, at the very least, is all I can tell for now.

[u.1:01] Thorn, huh?
[u.2:01] Freshly-crafted. You like?
[u.1:02] A little risky playing with something that’s been known to kill Guardians, isn’t it?
[u.2:02] Look where we are. Everything in the system’s been known to kill Guardians.
[u.1:03] Sure. But there’s facing trouble and there’s asking for it.
[u.2:03] This isn’t like the stories we’ve heard about Yor. Vale figured this out. Tamed it.
[u.1:04] Can you tame a sickness?
[u.2:04] Good question. Let’s go pick a fight and find out.
--
This card is of lesser importance. But it shows how Thorn was beginning to 'trend' in the Crucible. We don't know who is talking but we do know one of them has heard of Vale. Either the guardian knows Vale or has talked to Vale or simply knows that Vale has 'tamed' the Thorn. So he's trying it out and showing his friend in the process.
As more people got whiff of 'safe' Thorns being created I'm guessing the trend got pretty far in the crucible arena. And the nature of some guardians changed as time went on too. Subtle changes, but noticeably creepy and suspect.

Well, this is all just for fun. And I was bored and I thought I would put it up there for people to view at their leisure.

This was a good read, also might help me think up some theories! Bad theories...but still theories! 1121/10 👌
-
Good job with this, and thx for putting up all the grimoires I noticed something in the Widow's Court grimoire. Ikora was talking with a Hunter who clearly knew about Thorn and had experience with it judging by how he reacted and how Ikora said he was looking too closely at the situation. Also, Shin Malphur is one of the names in the related terms section, and he's a Hunter who dealt with Thorn personally. He said those Guardians were dealing with death. Could this be Shin Malphur? Is he still alive?
-
The Thorn trend? Sounds like year one, really. When Thorn was the most commonly used weapon in the crucible. Man, I miss Thorn's power so much.
-
Dredgen Bane, Dredgen Revan, Dredgen Malak, Dredgen Sidon, Dredgen Tyrannus, Dredgen Vader, Dredgen Sideous, Dredgen Maul, Dredgen... Ummm.... Help me out here guys.
-
Widows Court is Shin Malphur, he guy who killed Dredgen Yor and the original owner of Last Word.
-
I don't think I'll use thorn. SuperDregenBros DredgenEnderBros SuperEnderDredgen They just don't seem like good names
-
Edited by stitchjuju: 12/6/2016 7:11:54 AMThe other person talking in the Widow's Court card is Shin Malphur.
-
Nice job dude!
I can't believe this is an actual lore post with the proper tag.
-
Edited by EvolvedMonkey97: 12/6/2016 2:35:27 AMI think this may just be bungie canonizing the thorn meta from year one lol. Especially how thorn "trended." I like it.
-
So there was a cult after the most evil guardian known?!! Holy sheet!!
-
So I guess this whole thing about forged thorns becoming a crucible trend is Bungie's way of putting the year 1 thorn meta into the lore.
-
Finally some actual lore
-
The hunter mentioned on widow's court is Shin Malphur, the man with the last word who challenged Dredgen Yor. In this grimoire card I presume he and Ikora are testing the powers of thorn in a safe environment, after Yor had been killed.
-
Everyone wants to be a Sith Lord... Nice find tho, I love the Lord in Destiny...so much we don't know
-
I disagree with your interpretation of the Timekeeper card. I reckon Vale just needed his 50 primary weapon kills for the Shaxx bounty!
-
Edited by iTHORNY: 12/4/2016 11:51:11 PMI believe the card on widows court is actually a conversation between Malphur Shin and probably Ikora Rey as it is suggested in the tagged associations.
-
Really enjoyable read, thanks!
-
Carbuncle Blue and Carbuncle Red must get into the game ASAP.
-
Little detail of little importance. Designate-someone appointed to a position, but not yet installed. Ikora Rey is not yet vanguard yet in this card, to put some perspective on time. Also a good point this brings up is, who was the warlock vanguard before Ikora?
-
It seems less like actual lore and more like lore trying to spin a story based on in-game gear usage. Basically, "look at crucible, full of tools that use this weapon because of its obvious power. For shame"
