The conflict arises when people mistake beliefs for opinions.
You should respect someone's opinion, ie. "Blue is a fantastic color".
You do not have to respect someone's belief, ie. "I believe all dogs deserve to die".
It's a fine line to walk between them, but the distinction is important because otherwise people will begin to treat opinions as beliefs or beliefs as opinions, which inevitably leads to fruitless arguments that inherently can't reconcile because they are using differing definitions.
