This is a meme that has been making its way around pop culture for a while now which I fully disagree with.
You should have a basic respect for all people, but definitely not all their opinions. The only opinions that matter are ones based in facts and evidence.

You do realise you're talking about humans, right? Most people will turn violent the minute you disagree with then on a larger issue. The 2016 election cycle is all the proof I need on this. In the US people were getting into massive fights, beating each other, and destroying entire towns over politics. Humans are not tolerant of other's opinions in the slightest. Just remember: freedom of speech isn't there for you, it's there for the other guy.
Evidence doesn't mean shit if the interpretation of it is wrong. Not many people realize this. If you scrutinized a Detective story, and every piece of evidence, you'd see how the character is actually taking leaps of logic and jumps to specific conclusions despite there being wide arrays of possibilities for each piece of evidence. It's why (for example) the initial investigation for Adnon that lead to his imprisonment was complete crap. A defender and a prosecutor can use the same evidence, but each will argue completely different interpretations.

The definition of respect varies greatly. I respect people's opinions in that I will listen to them, hear them out, and try to see where they are coming from. This does not mean i will agree with or even acknowledge their opinion if it is stupid/horrid enough.

This is the Internet, damnit

That's his opinion. So, by doing what you say, I agree with and support his opinion. I can respectfully disagree with other people's opinions, when facts debunk them.

"The earth is flat" "Trump is a racist, homophonic, xenophobic, sexist, islamaphobic bigot" "Burning the flag in protest of the president elect is perfectly acceptable and we should be praised for our bravery and our willingness to stand up to the government (which we were totally fine with until November 9th)."
-
I may not respect your opinion, but I will fight for your right to have it.

I can't respect dumb opinions. I can't respect people whose opinions I can't respect. I can't respect dumb people.

3 RepliesAll opinions are important even ones that are based of false knowledge and information. Bad opinions prevent us from just accepting things as arbitrary fact and remind us the argument behind something. A decent example is if you look at the flat earthers. it's such a successful troll because often people don't know why we know the earth is round (besides pictures) and just look stupid because they can't even argue against an obviously false statement.

Opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one; but you don't always want to know about it.

1 ReplyEvery individual should be respected, but you don't have to respect the individuals opinions.

1 ReplyEveryone has a right to an opinion, but not a right to be shielded from criticism or arguments if they state that opinion publicly.

If I think you're a repulsive passive idiot. I don't care what you think because it will probably lead me down a road of complete Muslim takeover.
but I think thats called liberal
I don't give a damn about your opinion, I'm gonna nuke your house either way.

3 RepliesThats a resonable stance as it pretains to matters of objectivity like science and the natural world but such a stance on subjective matters like religion and worldview is dangerously arrogant and dogmatic as the "facts" of such matters is often open to interpretation.

8 RepliesThe conflict arises when people mistake beliefs for opinions. You should respect someone's opinion, ie. "Blue is a fantastic color". You do not have to respect someone's belief, ie. "I believe all dogs deserve to die". It's a fine line to walk between them, but the distinction is important because otherwise people will begin to treat opinions as beliefs or beliefs as opinions, which inevitably leads to fruitless arguments that inherently can't reconcile because they are using differing definitions.

The only opinions that matter are ones based in facts and evidence.
At that point, they're no longer opinions, they're facts. It is my opinion that metal is the best musical genre. Is that any less valid than someone's opinion that rap is the best musical genre? When it comes to music, and other opinion based discussions, facts don't really come into it, do they?

Difference between opinions and beliefs. Opinion: "I think short girls are cute" Belief: "I believe all dogs are cats."

1 ReplyTreating others with respect is a good policy. Some opinions are so horrible they cannot be respected.
