Patrol just kinda sucks. It always has. That was one of the letdowns when Destiny released. They talked about how you can load into any planet, meet up with friends, and explore those plants to your heart's desire, while live online events took place with other players in the world. Sounded really seamless and expansive. I thought it was going to be open world, full of places to explore and NPC quests to retrieve like Skyrim or Witcher 3. I thought the Public Events would be less scripted, more like something a Dev Live team kept up with weekly, and it'd be like assaulting a Cabal bunker where they've captured a valuable target where it took loads of guardians just to do. I dunno how to explain it, but it was just none of those things. The open world is just a bunch of mini areas cobbled together, and next to zero reason to explore. It isn't like open world games where you head out into the world and never know what you're going to come across. I used to love just walking aimlessly in Skyrim and coming across like a bandit cave full of loot and enemies and it's own little touch of story. Patrol missions are just the most mundane fetch quests. Very scripted Major battles. Even the most recent addition of the Siva Patrol quests are just "go here. Kill a few enemies. Get tiny fraction of rep. Move along." Enemies that are scattered about are just laughably easy. The most interesting thing to do used to be the "Wolves Prowling" thing, and even THAT was just a "kill waves" sort of thing. I actually thing this is THE core thing holding Destiny back. Raids are great, strikes are cool, crucible is still pretty fun and challenging, but the current way of playing is basically just load up every week, repeat endgame content, complete mundane quests, pray for RNG. level up to new cap. If it were more focused on the open world MMO/RPG elements, there'd be way more reason to play. God just to land on mars and explore Mars for forgotten settlers, rare dead orbit scout camps, rogue Fallen gangs, etc, all with their own new story driven quests with cool loot/items... man What could have been.

 • What they described is exactly what happens. You were just expecting too much like a lot of people.

 • Yeah they just hyped it to make it seem more than the mundane stuff it actually is. There ARE live events you can join in on. They are just lame as hell. You can join in with your buddies and hop on your sparrow and ride around the planet. There's just nowhere interesting to go or explore. It is open world, but nothing is really IN the open world, and it's just segmented levels. And you can't toss around a term like "open world" and just give us a giant empty space with just randomly wandering enemies and nothing else. Not when other open world games set such a precedent. This is kind of a phenomenon with movies and games in recent years though. The hype is way better than the actual final product. Take for example when Bungie was talking about the new social space. They talked it up like we'd have to fight to actually secure Felwinters Peak. That we would have to battle our way up the mountain and clear out the fallen. The way they made it sound was like it was gonna be this big interesting operation or siege to take back Felwinter. In reality, that story mission lasted maybe 10 minutes tops, and was literally just "walk up mountain. Shoot scattered fallen enemies. Done." Just another mundane story mission. The only remotely interesting part of it was the trolley ride just because it was sorta different. The Sepiks fight was no different and no more exciting than any other giant servitor. If you ask anyone, I bet you'd be hard pressed to find a guardian that loves or even just likes patrol. I don't think it's too much to expect that the open world exploration be engaging, interesting, and fun. Instead we have enemies that can be one shotted, nowhere to really explore and nothing to explore for, patrol beacons that give quests (that dealt ain't different from what you're already doing--walking around shooting), and zero NPC or story elements sprinkled in. If someone says "I got you a new car!" then hands you a shiny new model car... technically they did what they said. But, naturally your expectations were higher given the scenario. When a developer says "It's open world!" We tend to expect more than the equivalent of a big empty room with straw dummies to shoot at.

 • You have to remember they made this game mostly for the casual player like Halo was. They added in a Raid for hardcore players that like only make up 10-20% of the population. Most games last players 10-20 hrs, Destiny multiplies that by 100 for a lot of us. If it would be like you described, there would be a lot of people not playing because it would be too involved. I'll never touch Elder Scrolls or Witcher, just doesn't interest me. But Destiny is the perfect combo of kickass shooter with a touch of rpg to add prolonged play. Now could they add more? Of course and now that they employee around 750 people, they probably are making Destiny 2 quite a bit bigger. When Destiny came out, I think Bungie only consisted of around 250 employees, so a huge difference. As for RoI, it was developed in 9 months by an extremely small team. Overall I think they did a good job for a $30 DLC. I'm pretty much done with it now, but well worth the money.

 • It appeals to a broad player base yes. Which is great, I'm highly satisfied that I've sunk more hours into this game than any other. The play is addictive, love the raids, pvp is still fun. I just don't think they have the formula 'quite' down. The haven't nailed the open world RPG side of the game yet. This is all I'm saying about Patrol. I've never met one player that said "Dude, Let's go Patrol!" Usually we all groan when we gotta go there for anything.

 • 10/4, just good to get any bounties done quickly and fill up on ammo before a Raid.

 • That, & the game has been out for 2 years. Even if they put everything he expected in the game at launch, he'd be bored with it by now & would be complaining about something else that could've been in the game.

 • Uh, no. Been pretty satisfied with it. It's been fun. Doesn't mean I can't give it some honest criticism and say what my expectations were. Destiny did very well for me. But what I'm saying is the game wasn't exactly as most people expected. I personally think last gen held them back on a lot of stuff. Or I mean, you could find me those thousands of players that are just "STOKED" every time they load into patrol mode. My criticism was of patrol. Care to uh, tell me bout all those great times you had in patrol?

 •
Care to uh, tell me bout all those great times you had in patrol?
Vanilla: people went on patrol to gain rep, do public events, farm materials, & maybe jump into a VOG run. TDB: People used patrol to farm swords of crota & possibly get a husk of the pit. HoW: people used patrol to do wolves prowling events & farm ether keys TTK: people used patrol to find secret calcified fragments, farm hadium flakes, do CoO, etc. RoI: people used patrol for weekly quests, Archon forge, flaming axes, exotic quests, finding secrets, etc.
