How do you guys feel about human genetic engineering?

I'm curious how you guys feel about it, and what you think it means for our future generations.

  • I don't care much. But religious reasons that oppose it should be completely disregarded.

Hell yeah. If it advances fast enough, I will definitely put down some money to make my future children stronger and smarter. I actually think genetic engineering could possibly save our species in the future. Theoretically, we can make ourselves perfect species. I don't see why people would have a problem with this.

      • As soon as we isolate the gene or specific strand of DNA that creates highly gifted individuals, I'm all for it. Eventually you'll see a quote on quote superhuman, extremely physically fit with a high metabolism while also being a genius. I'm all for that.
GATTACA anyone?
• I think of it the same way I think of selectively breeding humans to create a master-race. Sounds inhuman to me.

        • It's dangerous, but since we refuse to let natural selection take it's place (ie down syndrome and other birth defects), genetic engineering might be the only way to evolve as a species.

          • Technologies always have the potential to be very beneficial or very dangerous. Looking at history, I'd say its usually better to advance than not. More importantly, it doesn't really matter what you think, these technologies are probably going develop anyway. Technology is our capacity for solving problems, and when we embrace it, we can better deal with whatever issues we face. Check out CRISPR for an example of a really cool gene editing technology.

          • Only to make sure genetic illnesses and disabilities are not passed on to the child. I think if it's used to minimise suffering it is a good thing, but I am cautious because of the other potential applications.

              • im in no way a professor within this field, but that isnt necessary to understand that its a huge slippery slope, and what could be some innocent changes to eye color could eventually lead to creating thousands of -blam!-ing unstoppable dwayne johnsons. the human species is known for letting shit spiral out of control. i think its great for fighting disease, but we dont know about the tradeoffs. changing someones height to 7 feet would lead to bone weakness and a tighter expiration date on all the internal organs. and this is only a known tradeoff, when shit inevitably spirals out of control(which i believe can very well happen if regulation gets easier and easier), what would happen when we make someone 9 feet? or make someones eyes way larger than usual?(people find bigger eyes attractive). suddenly everyone's walking around with MASSIVE -blam!-ING TITS LMAO tldr its great i want massive tits

As I am religious, I believe that it is not something we should be doing. While I understand that it helps people, genetically modifying/engineering humans is like playing God, and that, in my opinion is extremely dangerous. Humans are always creative, and yet destructive, look at the nuclear bomb, for example. It can be used as a deterrent, but can also be very risky. Human engineering could be extremely risky, one mistake in the ''code'' and if it happens, (which I hope not) and the ''human'' could reproduce, there could be serious birth defects. Meaning future generations would be seriously messed up. So I am absolutely against it.

It is easily a dangerous field of research. While there are benefits of understanding the construction of the human species down to a genetic level, that level of knowledge is really dangerous. Let's face it, we as a species do not have the greatest track record of doing the right thing all the time. We discover fire and quickly wield it to blow each other to pieces. We discover tools for survival and quickly we begin skewering ourselves with them. If we master the science behind human genetic engineering, how long before we become curious about what would happen if we splice human and animal genetics together? It scares me to think of the outcomes of those initial tests. Then what happens if those tests are perfected....we'd be creating rl furries. I mean even though I'm part of the furry fandom, the thought still scares me. Some of the things that would have to be taken into consideration is how difficult it would be for those individuals to lead normal lives. To be looked at like a freak every day...I'd imagine these new species of human would have rather high depression and suicide rates especially with those who realize they could have been born a normal human if it wasn't for mad scientists experimenting on their genetics as fetuses. I dunno, it is a weird subject to think about and it is something I'd rather not think about.....even though I know eventually we will get to that point in our history.
