Is Sunsinger doomed?

Sunsingers are arguably the least threatening subclass right now. The class was nerfed hard and altered to a great degree, rendering the former Praisers either back to the drawing boards or completely hopeless. My question is: Are they doomed? By this I mean that I ponder the, if any at all, fate of the once radiant warriors. With a neutered perk tree and the existence of a new artifact that all but nullifies the little remaining synergy, what hope is there? The outlook is bleak. It's so late in the game that Bungie is likely not even considering a potential overhaul and the forums seem to have resigned themselves to the death of the Sunsinger. I worry deeply for the future of my all time favorite subclass. I can't even bring myself to use it anymore except while piggybacking Tlaloc, bless the thing. What are some of your lingering thoughts on this matter, fellow guardians?

  • I use it more than any subclass. Did all of last iron banner with my sunsinger also. Still a great subclass.

    • They still have at least 1 useable build in PvE and PvP.

    • Sunsinger in pvp took a hit. I usually use void and med maps and stormcaller for tight maps. Pve is still good. The change to Viking funeral helps against bosses and majors with a DPS boost. Solar grenades with sunbreakers are great. And self res for raids or anything is a big win. I have helped a lot of teams in raids. Having self res means I can always tackle the hardest areas with the lowest light level teammate. When airborne modifier is on the hover perk coupled with a Icarus gun is crazy good All three classes have a subclass that is better or worse in pve vs pvp. It's knowing what to use in the situation.

        • I recently leveled all my characters to 400LL and ran as much high level content as I could solo on each subclass. The worst in PvE was Bladedancer, best in PvP though. In PvE, the most effective, in terms of kills v deaths was, Stormcaller closely followed by Sunsinger, then Sunbreaker, Gunslinger, Voidwalker and Nightstalker. Defender wasn't great but this subclass has other massive advantages: WoL illuminated in a team for boss damage is a huge benefit. Striker was last of all: mainly because I like it the least and didn't play it in PvP on principle! I know SS has been nerfed a lot but I still think this subclass is really effective. Getting a good build can be tricky now, but the stacks of VF really do make a difference, Radiant Skin isn't as flashy and insta-kill as Sormtrance but can really lock down areas effectively. Coupled with some great new exotics (OA and TS), Sunsingers are still one of the best subclasses in the game, I think. Look at the solo Aksis and Oryx fights. The subclass wasn't defined by VF and ToF (never really used Firebolts- Fusions in PvP and Solar in PvE). OP mentioned Tlaloc which will still out-kill anything in the game and coupled with RoI artifact means you can still create orbs for your team. In strikes I was still dropping as many and occasionally more orbs as team-mates running other supers which were used much more frequently. And I never mentioned the advantage of being able to pick yourself up as the last member of a FT or having self-res in the bank for picking up team-mates for tricky end-game encounters. I would say there's a lot to explore with this sub-class and many subtle and effective nuances to creating a complimentary subclass for others. Sunsinger, Defender and an offensive third (Stormcaller or Sunbreaker) is pretty deadly, or Sunsinger Nightstalker and Voidwalker...

          • It's not doomed. The self res keeps it alive in PvE and in PVP you have fusion grenades. Besides, The Ram+max armor subclass+solar armor+radiant skin=surviving the worst

Viking Funeral is great for bosses and the class has fantastic synergy with Tlaloc + Memory of Skorri. Sunsingers are still very worthwhile in PvE, but they do need help getting back up to the threat level of other subclasses in PvP.

            • Yup stupid PVP players made it so bad I get grenades back faster on Voidwalker than on my Sunsinger in Fukin radiance lol

            • Killed for PvP, risen for PvE. It actually has raid relevance now, beyond "oops, sorry I suck guys" option. Now with the new VF, it has serious built in DPS and boosts the whole party's damage.

            • Sunsinger brought out a flaw in the community. That will make it so it never returns to its full glory. Those that cry only do so because they can't understand why they are losing. Those that want easy wins will feed off the above crowd. We see it already as burn is a forgotten memory and now people still cry about Sunsinger. It's hard to see how to beat something you don't understand. I expect a rework in D2. It will make the class more acceptable to deal with for the majority. I hope it retains the core it was built on but I'm guessing it will be much tamer. In contrast more people will also probably play it because they understand the new mechanics better.

              • Bungie was worried about this happening. Remember when SS was OP? Bungie got major static when they explained they couldn't nerf it without wrecking it. But non-SS players threw a hissy, so they nerfed it, and were proven right. Believe it or not, Bungie sometimes knows what they're talking about.

The most fun I have ever had is when I ran Sunbreakers, with Touch of Flame and Viking Funeral with Radiant Skin. The B flag was not touched for 30 seconds from me just spamming forever lasting Solar Flares.

                  • They're fine. They just aren't as savage as they used to be.. do you Sunsinger mains just miss your firebolts? I don't get why every Warlock main doesn't just use Voidwalker alone. Best subclass tbh.

                    • I feel stronger actually. Being able to debuff by 5%~15% is amazing for PvE. I think Sunsingers are actually the best in Supremacy.

                    • The least threatening subclass right now? Really? I swear people really get dramatic for warlocks. In last week's trials I mostly ran into sunsingers and they mostly used stickies and kept dominating with that alone. In the trials before that when there were no revives all you saw were sunsingers, if they weren't a threat they would not be seen or used. Defenders are the least threatening subclass. Also did you not see mtashed videos on how he almost won a rumble match with just frags and melee?! He also went positive. Sunsingers were op and now that they're toned down a bit, people swear like they're the worst when they're not.

                      • Buff sungsinger While sunsinger is active you get your abilities faster. Grenades are more effective( more damage, bigger blast radius) melee does more damage

It's not too late for Bungie to make changes for any subclass including Sunsingers. Not all of the changes they made in June were negative. Solar Wind and Brimstone were improved with a reduced cooldown, +1 Recovery (Solar Wind) and bigger explosions (Brimstone). Sunburst guarantees an orb with Scorch kill. Viking Funeral has better utility for pve. Song of Flame has improved ability cooldown for allies. So it wasn't all bad. The subclass was much improved from a pve perspective and made less frustrating for pvp. That's not to say that they can't fine tune now to make it more competitive in pvp. They could, for example, revert the changes to Firebolt since Viking Funeral is out of the picture. Or Bungie could simply make the Burn from Touch of Flame slightly more effective. Maybe a middle ground between where it is now and what it was like with the original Viking Funeral.

                            • I think maybe just agility boost to radiance or sown thing but other than that radiance to me is as threatening as any other subclass (except for storm caller.... *shudder)
