Whether skill based matchmaking is in the game or not. The one percent may not understand the impacts on connection matchmaking has on new players. I'll start with skill based.
Skill Based Matchmaking on New Players
Skill Based Matchmaking allows the new player who has seen reviews and content creators love this game and has decided to go grab this off the shelves and play with their friends, or solo. Imagine they go into crucible for the first time. They go into crucible with fairly matched players of same level or category of play style. They have a blast and start to enjoy crucible after a couple of games. They have that equal chance to win a gunfight against the opposition and win the game and emerge victorious or even lose the game. The point is Skill Based Matchmaking allows that new player to have a chance.
On the other hand, the elite player that players 24/7 are familiar with basically everything in Destiny. They go into crucible and have players matched up against them with similar or higher skill and have a challenge to overcome in the crucible match. They can have a great game or be destroyed in that game. This could be through their team having a bad day, or it could be through the player being resisted to play with the best Weapons. Don't get me wrong use whatever weapon you want, but don't complain if you are losing to a clever dragon when you are using a sidearm. Another problem is LAG. Which pretty much all the community is aware of. Now LAG would happen in any game. But it seems to happening to Destiny a lot more then it should. Is this the result of Skill Based Matchmaking or is it the individuals connection and router? You can debate that for years and years and you won't get anywhere. The point is that for elite players, LAG can be the result of a flawless run in Trials or it could be frustrating when trying to have fun in the basic crucible. They will always complain about this when Skill Based Matchmaking is the main priority connection between players.
Connection Based Matchmaking
For the new player this could be good at first where they may have less LAG and interference, they most likely would be put up against elite players that would eliminate them every single game. If that happens then the new player would most likely give up on crucible and never touch it again. Then they may get board because of some contents drought and then they could even never touch Destiny again. That to me is sad and many would agree, don't get me wrong Connection Based Matchmaking can be fun, but it can cause extreme harm to those lower level players, with less experience and desire to win. Those elite of course would take advantage. That isn't the problem, it's the fact that most new players wouldn't have the drive to play in crucible because it is too dominant by elite players. Now Connection Based Matchmaking is good for those wanting a Lighthouse run, or an easy crucible win in he elite category. But those players like I have said throughout this article, they won't have any type of advantage if they were placed against Luminosity or True Vanguard or whoever. Connection Based May benefit the elite the most, but that new player wanting to play may have such a hard time, they may never touch console gaming again. (Yes that may be a bit extreme, but the point is obvious).
The Solution?
Well there is a solution, which would be a combination of both Skill Based Matchmaking and Connection Based Matchmaking. Dedicated servers would a solution, but for Destiny 1, probably not possible. Players that are matched up with fairly similar skill, and that are not far away connection wise on the globe would be the perfect solution. But if the connection based part was restricted to a certain country. Then, for example, those Europeans that want to play with those in the US won't be able to play with each other which would upset players a lot. The solution is coming guardians but the question I will poll is, "Is the 1% being selfish compared to that new player?"
This has come from a player that plays all the time, and has been in the same position as those new players and I know how it feels to matched up against God Like Players. It doesn't feel good. I hope you will understand the arguments for and against Skill Based and Connection Based Matchmaking.
It's has a pleasure, Andy out!
