I used to think flat earthers were genuine morons, until i came to find out that flat earth theory isn't a real thing. Its an inside joke used as a hypothetical narrative to make people think outside the box and to strengthen debating skills. https://www.theflatearthsociety.org/forum/index.php?topic=1615.msg12962#msg12962 Of course there is a deluded few who never figured out the joke or the underlying meaning, and actually believe for real ( lol ) . But i doubt you fall into that camp. That said, its always funny to see that most of the people commenting about how stupid a flat earther is, are the actual stupid people being punked hard. Ps. I imagine people at bungie are wise to the whole 'flat earth' thing. I doubt they would play along with your post.

Thanks for the post, but I think the only inside joke is science and the millions of people that have faith in concepts they dont understand. Flat Earth is real, and while what you say about FET's insistence on questioning assumptions is true, the earth is not a ball. Calling it an inside joke detracts from the fact that "science" is the biggest joke of all, and the people that derive their sense of meaning from "indisputable facts", are just as pious as the people in Kentucky that build ark museums.

  • Honestly, it's a stupid topic to think of for a debate team, unless they are in middle school. The argument is ended very swiftly by very observable facts.

  • The topics credibility doesn't really matter bro. It's more of a mental excercise in questioning beliefs no matter how absurd they may be. It's more of a philosophical excercise than a logical one. I mean, have you ever played devils advocate for a topic that you know is 100% ridiculous? It takes you out of your comfort zone and actually makes you question things that you wouldn't usually give a second thought. Back when i didn't know the inside joke, i used to argue with flat earth guys in various groups. Some of the worst ones i used to come across are the guys who actually dont believe, but can use legit science and physics knowledge to concoct pseudo scientific theories on the fly. And if you have limited knowledge of physics and stuff, arguing with them can become a serious head fk really fast lol. Honestly, some of these flat earth guys are god tier trolls totally commited to the flat earth bit. Some enjoy the role play debating. And a tiny portion actually are unaware of the joke and buy into whats being said.

  • You would have to be young or uneducated though. The whole theory is debunked by the fact that we can put planes in the sky, because projectile physics is based on earth being a sphere. This is stuff that's taught in high school physics.

Well yeh, i mean its easily debunked by the fact we have gravity and we can see a curved horizon. But as i said the topic isn't the actual point of it. The actual philosophical debate side of it is. Usually both people debating flat earth theory are aware its dumb. But it's like a game of chess. You throw logic out of the window and have a back and forth debate, with one guy using legit verifiable facts like gravity, stars, physics etc. And the flat earth guy tries to also use legit scientific principles to cast doubt on the verifiable proof. Nobody is changing anybodys mind. But It works as a mental critical thinking excercise to expand though process and learning to challenge percieved facts. What on the surface seems like a very dumb excercise, is actually a pretty smart thing to do as far as critical thinking excercises go. You just need to see the deeper meaning to the debate itself, not the topic.

  • I guess. I suppose I would prefer it to be a topic without a clear answer. I've actually used different aspects of religion (not a specific one) for this. It's a very thought provoking conversation when you have people willing to participate.
