Technically, you can trace all forms of Electronic back to four main sub genres: House: Known for it's repetitive 4-4 beat. Spawned subsequent sub-sub genres like 70's Disco, Trance, Hardstyle, Gabber, Techno, etc. Break Beat: Called this because of it's.. well.. broken beat. Unlike the 4-4 that came with House music, Breaks uses beat structure more common to Hip-hop(because Hip-Hop came from it), rock, etc. Spawned genres like Florida Breaks, Garage, Electro, Dub Step, Hip-Hop, and Trap. Jungle: Like Break Beat, only at a much faster tempo and generally more aggressive. Spawned Drum & Bass, Ragga, and Jump-up. Downtempo: Known for it's ambient and mellow nature. Also one of the most influential of the sub genres. The entire 80's New Wave/Synthpop scene came from this. As did Industrial music, Acid Jazz, and Trip-Hop. It's also really hard to list "best EDM albums" because it was way more common for music to be released in LP's of one to three tracks rather than full albums. Made DJing easier.
-
So do you think it'd be easier to scratch electronic out?
-
Probably easier since so many areas of music we now consider to be genres of their own came from it. But also a shame since it's so important to music as a whole. Your choice.
-
Subgenre: Ambient Band: Boards of Canada Album: Music Has The Right To Children
-
Do you think Ambient is significant enough to be one of the 5 main subgenres?
-
Yes because of all of the subgenres that came up because of it. I.e. Trip hop, IDM, downtempo, chillwave. The extremely prolific Tangerine Dream is considered ambient and some consider them legendary in electronic music.
-
Trip hop Massive Attack Blue Lines
-
But is trip hop that important? I want to select the 5 most important subgenres, not 5 random ones.
-
Edited by TwoGz: 10/4/2016 6:36:06 AMThat's going to be subjective, but to me trip-hop was to electronic music what alt rock was to rock music, rescuing the genre from pop silliness. But that's me.
-
You need to add trap, it's most definitely a necessity for a sub genre
-
Or DJ Shadow Endtroducing...
-
Pretty much Any album by monstercat.
-
Dubstep House Electro Trap Trance
-
Don't forget Jungle or Breakbeat! One of the pillars the genre was built on ffs
-
What do you think about Techno?
-
Edited by HarlesinCharge0: 10/4/2016 2:11:19 AM
What do you think about Techno?
I'd say it's actually separate from Electronic as it was an entire genre in its own right before the likes of Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, Chemical Brothers, etc came along and created their own genre. Their music is nothing like techno at least to me. I don't know though I could be wrong.
-
If we could avoid "techno" that'd be sweet. Techno, I feel, is an aberration. It's basically a blanket term for DnB, House, Dance, and Trance. See also EDM/IDM
-
Techno is one of the oldest forms of Electronic music. Spawned almost immediately after the creation of House in the 70's. People have just bastardized the term to be some all-inclusive word for EDM these days. But that's not it's fault.
