Into the Hellmouth, Part 7: Consulting a Cryptarch

Here's Part 7 of the ongoing Into the Hellmouth fanfic! If you like it, give it a bump, and tell me what you think! I'll have part eight out soon, but here's part six if you didn't see it! https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/198543069 Eriana immediately went to work tracking down Toland, but the task proved nigh on insurmountable. After the City Consensus formalized Toland’s banishment, he simply disappeared from the records. Apparently, the Warlock had decided to save the city the trouble of forced relocation, and slipped out during the night. Toland hadn’t had many allies, and even fewer friends when the banishment was formalized, and the few that had known him appeared to have died or disappeared some time ago. But it was when she went to the Cryptarchs that she caught an unexpected break. The Cryptarch was more than happy to take time off of decoding engrams to look into Toland’s location. He always loved a good puzzle, which made him rather friendly with the warlocks. The Cryptarch looked over tablet. “Hm,” he said, “There’s not much on our electronic records about Toland.” “I’ve noticed,” Eriana said dryly. “When the Consensus finalized Toland’s banishment,” the Cryptarch continued, “they also destroyed most of his writings - while, the electronic versions, anyways.” Eriana frowned. “What do you mean?” she asked. “Well, you aren’t the first to seek Toland,” the Cryptarch said. “Plenty before you tried - and failed, I might add. But, they feared punishment should their endeavors be realized, so they only wrote their findings down on paper. They also looked at the few paper records that Toland left behind in the Tower - most of which were compiled by my predecessors.” “Can you show me these records?” Eriana asked. “Certainly,” the Cryptarch replied. “Let me just get my apprentice.” The Cryptarch walked off into the Tower, and Eriana followed. “Rahool!” he called. “Rahool!” No response. He frowned. “Where is that boy?” he muttered. The Cryptarch walked around, frowning. Eventually, they came across an awoken boy of no more than twelve years, sitting in a chair. His eyes were closed, and a book was in his lap. The Cryptarch’s face soured. He gave the chair a kick, and the boy started. When he saw the Cryptarch looking at him, he half-jumped, half-fell, out of his chair. “Well well,” the Cryptarch said crossly, “look at what we have here. Busy decoding those engrams, I see.” “I - I was just -“ the boy began. “No excuses,” the Cryptarch cut in. “But I’ll have to save the reprimanding for later. We have a Guardian who needs our help!” The boy nodded, his yellow eyes darting back and forth between Eriana and the Cryptarch. “Yes, of course,” he said, “with what?” “Everything we have on Toland,” the Cryptarch said, “you’ll bring it here. Now.” Rahool nodded. “Yes sir. Of course sir. At once sir!” Then, he scurried off. The Cryptarch sighed. “I don’t know what I’m going to do with that boy,” he said. Eriana didn’t know either. “You’re trusting him with decoding engrams?” she asked. “None of the important ones,” the Cryptarch said dismissively. “Besides, well, I have time to help him. Business, as you might imagine, has been slow.” Eriana nodded. The number of guardians coming to the tower with fresh engrams had dramatically decreased since the invasion of the moon. For obvious reasons. A minute or two later, Rahool came back, empty-handed. The Cryptarch frowned at him. “Where are the files, boy?” the Cryptarch asked. Rahool looked sheepishly at his feet. “Someone checked them out for personal use,” he said. The Cryptarch snorted. “And you didn’t report it to me?” he asked. Rahool continued looking at his feet. “I forgot,” he said. The Cryptarch face palmed. “Well, then who checked them out?” he asked. Rahool hurriedly produced a tablet from his robes. “It was a - a guardian,” he said. “It says that his name is Wei-Ning.” Eriana’s eyes widened. Wei-Ning? He’d gone to the Cryptarchs for help with Toland? It made sense - Ning must’ve decided to go to them once the Tower had refused to help. But why hadn’t he told her? He must’ve - And then the awful, awful truth hit her, and she recoiled like she’d been punched in the gut. Ning hadn’t trusted her. Logically, it made sense - Eriana had been adamant about not letting Toland back to the Tower under any circumstances. It would have made sense for Wei-Ning to not include her in his investigation. Still, it hurt that her closest friend had kept something like this secret. She’d even told Wei-Ning about her membership in the Hidden! What did he think would happen? That she would report him to the Vanguard? That she would - “Ma’am,” the Cryptarch said, his voice cutting through her thoughts, “are you alright?” Eriana shook her head. “I’m sorry,” she said, “It’s just - well, Ning was a friend of mine.” “Was?” Rahool asked. The Cryptarch shot him a warning glance, but Eriana waved her hand. “It’s alright,” she said. She fixed Rahool’s gaze. “He died during the invasion of Luna.” Rahool started. “Oh,” he said, “I’m - I’m sorry.” Eriana shook her head. “Don’t be,” she said, “thanks for your help.” And with that, she left.
