AMA about the field of Psychology!

Psychology has been my life since I was fifteen years old. After going through a bout of depression and suicide attempts with a few stays in a hospital, the idea of studying the human mind has intrigued my existence. As some of the closer friends I have established on this forum know, I am currently a junior studying Psychology and Legal Issues with a minor in U.S. History. Recently, I was accepted to an interning position at the local FBI field office for my state next summer. This opportunity is extremely exciting to me. I hope that one day my degree will allow me to work with the FBI, or another criminal investigation agency, to pursue and bring to justice sex offenders who target minors. Whether you are interested in the field, have a question about possible job opportunities with a Psychology degree, or just have a random question; please feel free to ask. Thanks and have a great day Offtopic.

  • I am not versed in psychology whatsoever, but I did spawn a question for you. Now, the answer may very well be dependent on the variables of the circumstance itself, but then again, they may not. Why are some people susceptible to believing in the theories that average people see as ludicrous or insane? Like the theory that all of our lives are contained within a simulation and we're all just programs. Or that you never know if what is actually happening in reality is even happening at all. That maybe your memories were planted there by something else, or you think your mind is creating this entire alternate universe that you seem to be living, day by day, when you should actually be awake, 1,000 year in the future coming out of cryo-stasis? Or maybe that nothing is even real at all, and you have absolutely no clue who you really are, what you really are, or why you're living on a place called earth, part of a race of intellectual beings called humans, and born to parents Lynda and Jon, who named you Billy. Like, some people full on believe this things as cold hard fact, and are indisputable. I think it's pretty interesting how they can lead themselves to believe things like that, and I wonder if it's just how they grew up that led them into that way of thinking, or maybe an early interest that just evolved with age. Hopefully I made the question clear enough to understand. If it's not in your area of expertise or does not pertain to psychology some how (I'm very tired right now and trying to muster this together with what physical and mental power I have left before collapsing to slumber), I apologize. Also, it's good to see that you've recovered and are getting an internship! While I'm not knowledge in psychology, studying the human mind has always seemed to intrigue me. Why people do things the way they do, why they think the way they do, or act. Sometimes at work, I'll literally pick a single individual every now and again and watch everything they do very closely, how they talk, they're gestures, attitude, appearance; everything I can in a short amount of time to just find out a little about them. Or see if I can at the very least. I usually do that when its a slow day and I'm bored as hell, but it's still interesting to process it all.
