A bad PvPer's experience/take on SBMM - the built in system meant to help players like me...

[i]UPDATE: I just want to thank everyone for contributing to this conversation and for sharing their own experiences and knowledge. I have learned a ton already, and am glad that our community can have constructive, open conversations like this. I just want to say that I am doing my best to keep up with replies; however, I am in very poor health and it is very hard to maintain the pace that this conversation has. Please know that I will read everything as quickly as I can, but I encourage all of you to continue sharing and offering input actively, as it is truly a great thing for us to come together and talk about the game we love and dedicate much of our time and energy to. Thank you all.[/i] I don't really know why I am posting this, but after three games today with a k/d of below 0.30, I have lost all shame and dignity. A lot of people think that SBMM (skill-based matchmaking) only hurts the most talented players, as it pits them against other very skilled players, making every match a chore and ultra "sweaty." BUT... I am a lower-skilled PvP player, and I have come to realize that SBMM is really hurting my Destiny experience as well. The thing is, my best friends are all quite skilled in the Crucible, so, it hit me today in a bout of loneliness that I was avoiding my friends, because: If I play with a group of my friends, their great stats are a major matchmaking factor used when finding opponents for us to play against. That said, playing with my very best friends ultimately means a few things: I will get destroyed. (And) We are likely to lose when I go 2 and 15 and single-handedly cost my team of friends the game. So, as a result, i have been avoiding doing my favorite thing--playing Destiny PvP--with my very closest friends, which SUCKS. This is hopefully a little food for thought for those in support of SBMM to unsuccessfully make playing crucible as a lesser-skilled player more enjoyable (i.e. easier). Sorry for the lengthiness.

  • If it's meant for the casual player, why are the casual players constantly matched against fireteams? Is it skill based? A cooperative team versus non cooperative? I'm constantly matched against fireteams, making me think, well, it seems like there's more than enough fireteams going around to face EACH OTHER. But nope. Fireteam versus solos=sbmm

  • Play solo until your skill improves. Stop moaning about a feature that should be in all games. Too many pussies on this forum just wanna play against noobs all day to shit on them. I like the idea of sbmm and want to go up against opponents of similar skill level.

      I ran into the same thing. My friends though told me to just keep going. My kd while still low is going up. I find that now when I play alone I end up on or near the top of the leaderboard. Do I still have my 4 kill .47 kd days. Yep sure do but over all I'm getting better. Mostly because my friends were more concerned with me learning and having a good time then there win/loss record. If I were you I'd talk to my friends and just keep trying.

As it stands now, the only time I get into the Crucible is just to get the weekly Sterling Treasure. I collect no bounties and I don't care who wins or loses. My apologies to my fellow Guardians, but it's not my fault, it's Bungie's....

    • No. SBMM must stay. It's completely unreasonable to have a game where people who like each other team up and enter games, then just play against other people and the team with the best players wins. We can't have that, we need to separate good players from the bad. Ignore their connections, nerf their weapons and randomly disconnect them from games. That's a much better experience for everyone I'm sure you all agree.

      • SBMM has its benefits, but your point made me consider this; How am I supposed to get better if I only face people in my skill bracket? Thanks for keeping me from an occasional super stomp, but I think seeing a significantly better player every now and then might encourage me to play more efficiently in the long-term.

          There are too many downsides to sbmm. If I'm better or worse than someone that's that but out of everything that needs to be prioritised it should be matchmaking times and latency of matches. Just went back on titanfall last week as I had ea access and there were 800 people playing attrition (team deathmatch) in my region; I was loaded into a game instantly (10 second loading screen) and everyone had green bar connection. That's what matchmaking should be like. Im pretty sure destiny has more than 800 players in my region so no one can blame a dwindling player base, our situation is by design.

          I don't really care about the opponents skill, I just want the solo player expereince to improve. It's just beyond me how they can allow such a big portion of the community to have such a bad expereince. It's backfill after backfill mixed up with solo VS team matches from start or solo VS 2x3-man premades. The system could atleast try to put solo players in the same match or atleast balance out the smaller premades across the teams. It gets ten times worse when you, as a solo player, actually have managed to maintain a, for the circumstances, decent k/d. Now you have to play teams consisting of communicating +2.0 k/d players. I would normally not a have a problem playing those people, just not when they have a communicating team and I'm stuck with 5 pugs who dont know what a mic is. Just to give you an idea what a normal lobby looks like for me: * The majority of people are using subclass emblems or scarab emblems, with the occasional weekly emblem or MoT2. * The average grimoire is probably + 4900, meaning they have played a lot of PvP and maxed out basically everything. Occassionally you come across some really low grimoire people - but it's only low because all they do is play PvP or started new account. * Everyone has the best weapons in the game and since the best weapons are legendary God rolls they'll also have truth for heavy round. *Ironically, warlocks are almost extinct or at the very best at a very small minority. The teams usually exist of three titans and three hunters +/- 1. So yeah, be on your toes and stay frosty, guardian.

          • Eh, if it's connection based then your match ups are gonna be random so unless you're real bottom of the barrel then it's gonna be at least close to fifty fifty on who you're playing against being better or worse then you.

          • I've experienced this on the other end. im a much better player than most of my closest friends so if they go into crucible with me they do exponentially worse than they do on their own and some just avoid crucible in its entirety now or outright refuse to go into PvP with me. PvP is my favorite thing to do in destiny and I'm finding it increasingly more difficult to play with my closest friends.

          • I think that the best solution would be for Bungie to have 1 CBMM 6v6 playlist, so that everyone will stop bitching about it. I'm so tired of seeing these stupid posts.

          • This is very accurate i have some real life friends xbox friends that i wouldnt play crucible with because they were incapable of going positive in say ib or skirm resulting loses. So i would just stick to the repititive pve

          • This 50 y.o. guardian likes to play PvP with my 12 yo son,who is MUCH better at PvP than I am..... Everytime we play together I get CRUSHED.Doesnt matter if im host or he is,we always end up playing against his level,not mine. Not fun!

            OK, so your friends are proping you into their lobbies. I know it, I do it to my friends. They don't play nearly as well in my lobbies and sometimes it's disheartening for them. But you know what? When they go back to their lobbies, they start crushing it. Like hard. They all know that it's harder to play with me because they will get harder opponents...but they recognize their skill increasing as an offset of that increased difficulty. I never had SBMM to protect me when I learned to pvp in year 1. In fact, I finished all of the exotic questlines that had me go through crucible (including Thorn) and it was very difficult. Thorn alone was a two day (10 hour+ each day) grind to finish, but I did it. I used to be a 0.6 k/d player back then. From December to July of year 1 that was what I could muster. But the lobbies had a good mix of players. It had players that I could beat, and players that absolutely trounced me. That's where the appeal of crucible grew for me. I'd spend time fighting these tougher opponents match after match as they constantly domed me, cross mapped me with TLW or straight up shotgun rushed me. I watched how they played. They didn't break up lobbies back then. I'd stick with those opponents too, and stay in those lobbies as long as they did. I didn't care about my stats (I still don't, but I recognize they dictate the experience I have), and chasing them down became my goal. Win or lose, I got something, and thralling into them didn't feel as punishing because I learned from my engagements, and by the time TTK launched, I had gone flawless in ToO (Twice total), and brought that abysmal KD from 0.6 (and about 8 months of holding onto that number) up to a 1.3. Then in year 2 something changed. SBMM started into effect. It was subtle in September, noticble in November, and almost unplayable in December. My KD didn't change, if anything it slightly improved, as did my win-rate...but the game itself became significantly different for me. Not only was the gunplay changed, and I had to re-learn it...but the lag itself started to get so severe I had no idea if I was improving. I couldn't tell if my losses in my encounters were because of my own faults, odd weapon balancing, SBMM itself, or just the lag itself. Even if I found an opponent I wanted to learn from it didn't matter. It only took one bad game for the lobbies to break up. SBMM and its implications took away the challenge for me. That lack of consistency in gameplay made it impossible to tell what I was doing wrong or where I was improving. It also closed to doors to finding reliable opponents to emulate...because things were mostly relative in my lobbies. My average win percentage went up, as did my KD...did that mean I was having a better time? Hell no. People that argue that skilled players ''just want to stomp the lesser skilled players and not have a ''sweaty'' pvp experience in the crucible'' have it wrong. We just want to be able to play the game and experience the skill is it comes without lag. I'd argue that people who argue FOR SBMM want the same thing. They don't want to be challenged and pushed outside of their comfort zone because they're ignorant to the benefits of going up against harder opponents, or because they hypocritically don't want to go against ''sweaty'' opponents themselves. You want SBMM? That's fine IF the game had dedicated servers. It doesn't, so the game should never compromise playability just to isolate those easily intimidated and unwilling to invest time and effort into beating 1 or 2 difficult players that would be bound to show up in their lobbies.

            • I know what you mean. I am max light on all characters, but my best gaming friends are a bit lower than me. I can't really go into a match with them because if I lead, I am bringing them to a realm of torture. If they lead, I bring torture to other, low light level players.

              • IMO isnt that you are a "bad" player 1.The SBMM in destiny is not "legit". 2.You can manipulate the SBMM. 3.The most of the "good" players in destiny they have one main account and 2-3 account with very low k/d,elo. 4.With this way a good player(1.5+kd) can play against a players with 0.5kd. This is how the carry works and thats why the sreamers is like they play against bots every time. P.s.dont forget the titanone cronusmax and m/k users. Dont give up and you will be better.

              • SBMM if connection latency wasnt such a huge factor. Due to Bungies p2p netcode latency is way too important to ignore it when implementing SBMM. Have you ever seen a oficial MLG final through internet? The answer is no. Destiny needs to move to a private server in order to make SBMM work properly.

              • This has been rolling around my mind for a while and I've debated on when I should post or not but now seems like a good or time as ever. I love SSBM. You read correctly. I LOVE IT. Why? I've never met so many friends in such a short amount of time. Almost ever match I get in is someone I recognize and I play with at least weekly. Those games have been the most fun I've had since year one. We play our sweatiest and learn each other's playstyles. We hold small tournaments atleast every month and I always have someone to run threes with whenever I log on. The thing is I would've never met any of these people without SSBM. As for lag I rarely experience such a intense session of latency. Only in a blue moon do I see a red bar warrior running through walls on Rusted Lands. Even if I do I usually just treat them like a regular player and shoot them like a regular player and they go down in a delayed spin. I thank Bungie for matching me up with these great people. And I hope it stays for the next expansions/games. Cheers.

                • This is a really bad time for bad/so-so players like you and me to be playing PvP. The reasons for that is due to Bungies' matchmaking changes in the recent months because of a decreasing player base. They've increased the skill gap (K/D range) of the players we're going up against. Solo players like me aren't being matched with only solo players anymore, we're now matchmade with fireteams. I haven't played much PvP the past 2 weeks because I've grown tired and frustrated with it. I'm back to my year 1 raging and cursing.
