Darkness? What?

Okay, so I'm a bit confused about something. The darkness refers to all four races we meet in Destiny, right? Fallen, Hive, Vex, and Cabal. If they are all one force called the darkness, why the hell do they fight with each other? I mean, it just makes no sense.

    • Well dear, the hive gained power from the deep/darkness and thus set on a course to kill all life in the universe including the traveller. The vex came into the world due to Crota, and they had the goal to survive. And that required eliminating all threats. So they fought the hive since they both had conflicting goals. The fallen were attacked by the darkness and the hive just as we were. But the traveller left them. So they were manipulated by the darkness to attack us. And the canal are a mystery, the emperor could be a slave to the darkness or wants the traveller as a weapon. So they all have the goal of destroying us/traveller or taking it. They seemed all be tide to the darkness, but I guess it's an allied of my lord is not my ally. But cabal and fallen I believe have a pact of non violence that was broken by the wolves.

    • The Hive wanna kill everything. The hive attack The Fallen Fallen survive Vex are programmed like robots to build machine worlds and to kill anything that could destroy their machines. Probably why we can't communicate with Vex because there brains are said to kill any threat to there machines. Fallen arrive on earth get angry at us think we are thief's and kill people. Cabal are neither running from The Hive. Came to investigate Vex activity. Or setting up war camps on Mars.

Long story short we don't know. At least according to this article as players we don't know, along with our guardians not knowing either. So we have to look at it from two different angles, one as Guardians inside Destiny, and two as players outside of Destiny. In vanilla Destiny there was the "I could tell you" cutscene with the Speaker. He pretty much either: A, gave us his honest interpretation of the darkness, or B, gave us some fear inducing properganda of the darkness. Both points are up for debate but the simaliarity is that both views have a concept of the darkness not an actual tangable source or entity. If you listen to the Vanguard, the Speaker and the Faction Reps in the tower they all muddle this and that. The corrolation to them all is that they think any and all enemies of humanity are "The Darkness" thus a concept of it's existance. This propergates more fear to fuel thier own agendas, however... Every lie is based on some sort of truth. The Guardians are mankinds' last line of defense and they are it's protecters. So you were created in Light to protect Humanity or so you were told. How do you not know that The Travaler created you to protect itself? Knowing it were to be protected by humanity through proximaty for doing this. Why not give them a way to defend themselves through Guardians and in turn, defend itself at the same time? Why put up all this extra effort instead of just running like it always has? Why is it defending itself when we know as players that it had abandoned many civilizations before it? Not just the Whirlwind that drove the noble Eliksni into Fallen scavangers. In the Book of Sorrow the God Wave (the collapse) not only happened after the synergy (golden age) of Fundament, it was predicted too. It seems to me the worms know much more about the Travaler than we do. How else could they have known about or anticipated these events without prior knowladge? This also brings up the question. Do our true enemies know more about the Travaler than we do as players? Of course the Guardians and the Last City have no knowladge of this infomation. This will be very intresting to see how things will unfold and the aftermath that is due to follow. Don't you agree? Oh reader mine...

    • The Darkness is an entity that is so powerful that it is simultaneously a philosophy and a force of nature. The minions of the Darkness is a blanket term for everyone who fights us. By the very nature of fighting against us, the forces of the light, they aid the Darkness whether or not they know it.

      • The Darkness is nothing more than lazy story writing. Nothing better than a catch-all to refer to all your problems by! Bungie's gravitated away from it since the original launch. The (proto)Hive encountered the Traveler apparently first, but rejected Leviathan in favor of the promises of what lay deeper, the Worm Gods. No Darkness is needed as a higher motive, especially since the Worm Gods are highly implied to be the Fundament's version of devils. The Fallen encountered the Traveler, and following its abrupt departure had a collapse similar to our own, which was followed by a rapid deterioration of social structure and a wayward exodus of sorts that leads to the mercenary Fallen we have now that want the Traveler back to restore their race to glory. This contradicts their being born of Darkness. The Vex have unknown beginnings but worship the Black Heart in the original game -- the only time the so-called Darkness plays a semi-important role in the storyline. The Cabal -- forgive me if my knowledge is a bit rusty -- are a militarized race set on taking planets over. If I remember correctly, they don't like the darkness rather than being allied with it. The Taken -- Oryx's personal army. The ability to "take" was acquired from slaying Akka, not by any move of the Darkness. The Darkness is implied to be a faceless, all-powerful entity if it can tie these races all together to attack the Traveler, since it would have to orchestrate the very events that happen in a way that not even the Vex can do. I'm not sure that is a very enticing shoestring to tie the whole story together with.

Those four races are not in the traveler's light, correct? Hence, darkness. Seems to me that darkness, or forces of darkness, is like the term infide or heathenl; anyone that doesn't believe in the tenets of my religion is an infidel. Infidels can still fight amongst themselves. I may be way off base, but this makes the most sense to me.

        • The darkness is not a force within the alien races. No one really knows what the darkness is. But there are some things in the grimoire that makes us speculate what it may be, especially in the books of sorrow. My idea is that the Darkness is the Deep

          • The darkness was just a catch it all term for everything that was trying to kill us. Remember in destiny no one has any answers. Even in character no one had a clue what in fact is going on. All we are trying to do is just survive. That context is very important while dealing with any of the lore!

          • That's not actually true. The Fallen and Cabal aren't the Darkness. The Vex were originally from another Dimension but brought to ours by the Hive. This caused them to become corrupted and start to worship part of the Darkness however they still fought the Hive. The reason the Fallen attack us is because they used to have the Traveller by their side but then the Hive destroyed their homeworld and they were abandoned. They followed the Traveller and found us. Now they're trying to get the Traveller back. The Cabal are just world conqurers and are trying to take over our system.
