If I'm not mistaken, ability to travel FTL is referred to as a "warp drive" in the game. I would assume that destinys concept of a warp drive is similar in nature to warp drives in other fiction : you aren't physically traveling faster than light, you are warping between two physical locations in space and time either through simulated wormholes, folds in space time, shortcuts, Etc.
As for the transmat system, I find it very similar in nature to teleportation in star trek. It's short range instant transmission of matter by breaking matter down to its basic particles in one location and perfectly reconstructing it in another location. Trans (transmit) Mat (matter).

In the concept of wormholes, the ship or object is enclosed in a spherical bubble while traveling at FTL speeds. In simple terms, u can somewhat compare it to u riding in an elevator up or down. You "yourself" have no physical motion, but the elevator in turn is carrying you to your destination. This phenomenon appears that you moving at the at the same rate as the elevator. You are being pushed and pulled by elevator when going up because of gravity. In a zero g environment, the ship or object within the bubble would experience the same forces as it appears to be moving on its own. With conventional propulsion methods and hypothetical ones, there is simply not enough thrust to counteract gravity when attempting to go FTL. In the "warp" bubble however, the outside of the ship or object would appear to stretch or elongate at the front simply because the bubble "carrying" the craft has counteracted the force of gravity, "pulling" the craft through space. The same would be true for the rear as it would appear to be compressed, essentially "pushing" the object forward. Edit 1: I apologize if this post sounds a little confusing. The amount of research and testing that NASA undertakes on this subject is mind boggling. Also, the laws of motion associated with this concept may be completely different in regards to the two environments discussed so I may be wrong on this whole thing. But hey, no one's perfect. Feel free to add onto this or comment.

Edited by Pneuma 033: 8/29/2016 6:41:36 AMFrom what is understood of the laws of nature, there is not even a hypothetical "propulsion" system that can go FTL, as it would violate general relativity. There's no such "speed" as FTL, because no form of matter can move at or faster than the speed of light. The theory/concept of a spaceship that travels FTL using wormholes and hypothetical "warp" travel does not imply that the ship physically moves faster than light, but that it can travel from point A to point B faster than light can buy bending the laws of nature (shortcuts through time and space).
