I like this question.
The sun is smaller and much closer to the surface of the earth, and orbits above earth's surface along with the moon and stars. As a Planar Theorist, I do not pretend to understand extensively that which I have never observed. At best we have only seen the sun through ground based telescopes. Likely, the sun is solid (not a ball of gas and fire) luminous, but very hot as well. Until real space travel takes place (if it is even possible) we will just need realize that we dont have all the answers.
If we were to apply your theory, space travel would not be possible, as space (the absence of matter and frictionional gravitation) would not react how you might think it would. It would simply be a void, something like the empty air between you and the ceiling.
How does the sun float? Would it not simply come crashing down? What suspends it above us? Is there a string attaching it to the ceiling? Why does the ceiling not come crashing down?
So many questions. So many questions...
