I've been having issues playing with one of my friends that lives about 3km from my house where if it is just both of us in a party, we have NAT issues but as soon as a third person joins then its fine.
The other issue is that when I am playing with him in a fireteam, for some unknown reason it will make me lag really badly. I thought it may have been me but every speed test I do tells me I'm running anywhere from 20mbps down and 2up to 100mbps down and 10up so i have no idea why it is making me lag. I keep getting messages from people saying how I am teleporting all over the place yet my internet is fine. This issue only happens when I play with my friend, yet not when Im playing with two other people from opposite sides of the world.
I received threats over PSN yesterday that I will have a package sent to my house and the guy called me buy my real life name because he thought I was lagging. Bungie...please fix this ASAP. It has gone on for too long.

Edited by jnikoley: 8/9/2016 6:14:56 PMIf you are receiving real threats, you need to report it to sony/microsoft so those players can be banned. If you are lagging a lot, and getting inconsistent speed test results, you may have packet loss/jitter. Test for packet loss from a wired pc in command promt, or run a test on pingtest.net

Although the fact that everything was fine for 2 years until this latest patch does suggest this is caused by something on their end, not mine or my friends...
-
Well, you said you are sometimes only getting 20/2 down/up, and other times you're getting 100/10. That's really inconsistent.
-
Yeah thats true. I used to have internet speeds maxed at 7mbps down and 700kbps up a few months ago and I didnt have too many lag issues then which is why Im not too fussed about the inconsistent speeds atm. However if i can keep near 100down more often than not id like to. Assuming im losing packets, what can be done about it?
Assuming im losing packets, what can be done about it?
If you have packet loss, the fix will depend on the cause. If you are on wifi, switch to wired. If your modem signal strength levels are bad, It could be the wiring in your house. Sometimes, connecting your modem to a different cable source in another room helps, as well as eliminating any splitters between the cable outlet and your modem. There are many other things that can cause packet loss that you have no control over. You would have to contact your ISP in most of those cases.

Okay thanks for your help

7/0.7 down/up is enough bandwidth to game on, but you should be consistently getting what you're paying for. If you are getting so much variation in speed test results, it could be a sign of an unstable connection. When running any test (speed/bandwidth, ping, etc.), make sure you do it from a wired pc, not on wifi, and not from your console. Testing on wifi can give inconsistent results. Make sure nothing else is using bandwidth when you test (streaming, netflix, etc.). If you still get major inconsistencies, you may need to contact your ISP to resolve the issue. Also, gaming on wifi can cause pvp lag. This is why it's recommended to play on a wired connection.

Ah yeah i usually do my speed tests wireless on my phone app so that could be it. Ive never bothered to test it connected via my laptop as i dont use it that much haha. I have my ps4 wired in to an adaptor in a powerpoint since my modem can only be in one room in the whole house. That gives me pretty inconsistent speeds but its faster than when i unplug it and play wirelessly

Using your home's electrical wiring as a substitute for a LAN cable is a bad idea.

Really? The adaptor is a wifi extender for my end of the house and by plugging into that i got faster speeds than by running off wifi. The trouble is i only have 1 place in the house that can have the modem since it goes through a foxtel connection and not a standard phone line like most modems. I couldnt get the connection installed in my room either when my isp came to install everything as they said its a job for an electrician, which would cost me about $600AUD apparently. And given i just forked out $500 for my first two months then $135 every month after that for 24 months...i just dont really want to spend more unless i know its going to give results. Just not sure if its worth it u know? I feel that id be able to game and stream on my lowest speeds i get currently and dont wanna rock the boat haha

Of course wired would be better, but since you can't do that, I'd try running the console off the primary wifi, and ditch the extender if you can. Try locating your primary router high up in the room your modem is in. That should give you a better signal. The thing is, if the extender is located near your console, the signal it's recieving from your main router is no stronger than what your console is getting. An extender/repeater should be somewhere between the main router, and the far side of your house. Also, if you have a lot of neighbors, run a wifi scanner from your pc or phone. This will let you see what channels are being used so you can set your router on a different channel. I run mine on channel 11 because my ps4 controller's bluetooth could possibly recieve interference from the mid range wifi channels. Keep in mind, even if you have everything set up perfectly, Destiny will still have lag. There's nothing you can do to effect other peoples good or bad connection, or if they are very far away.

Oh yeah good point. Thanks for all the tips! Yeh i know itll always have lag with such a worldwide game but if i can improve my connection at least im doing my bit. Should also improve the quality of my stream too which would be nice

Thanks. Will test this after work. Ive done other speed tests when im in game and its still fast, its just when im with this one specific player. One thing i havent tested is if this problem exists when we are not playing destiny
