Leveling after lvl. 34

Hey there, I seem to get stuck after level 34. I read that I will have to buy DLC's to be able to level to lvl. 40. Is this true or is there another way? Thanks in advance!

Level 34 is the year one level cap. In order to progress you will need to purchase the Taken King which holds the level 40 cap.
