I agree that this is exactly what the majority of PvE players would love, but if the abilities are too different between classes, PvP would become unbalanced.
I would love for this game to become PvE centric, but as the weapon sandbox changes show, it really is PvP focused. There is cool and fun content in PvE, but there will never be interesting abilities and skill trees like Mass Effect or Borderlands because that would make the classes too different for PvP. Same for exotics. To not give anything too much strength in PvP, exotics are basically useless with a small change that isn't really "exotic".
Summary: Because Destiny seems to be PvP centric in balancing, the classes will always be boring grenade, boring melee, super that gives a kill or two, and a some subclass perks that don't really change anything.
but if the abilities are too different between classes, PvP would become unbalanced.
MOBAs are have dozens of "classes," yet they are perfectly competitive.

I agree. Overwatch pulled that off well too. I would love to see more abilities, but I just think given how Destiny has been patched and the newer content that has come out, there is a definite trend of classes being the same and gear being weak. Like I think year 2 exotics are weaker and less exotic than year one. I think the overall idea the developers want is all the stuff to handle the same and be the same strength. It would be great if there were some totally OP guns to play with and earn, or really varied abilities that you could use instead of gunplay, but I just don't think it will ever happen.

Probably because that's really hard to set up properly. MOBAs are consistently patched, Overwatch was in beta for literally forever. Biggest issue is that making new abilities is expensive.
