Should Last Word be changed?

Before I even begin I know for a fact about 80% of the Destiny community is going to jump down my throat for voicing this but I think the Last word is far too powerful and overused. (Criticise after you read everything please) The Last Word as a concept is awesome the fast fire rate and focus on hip firing make it a snipers best friend when someone creeps up on them. Yet for the last several months maybe even longer than a year, The Last Word has been terrorising the crucible with ridiculous fire rates and massive damage per shot that is increased by its heavy impact. The Crucible has been devolving into a world where if someone attacks you be they close or even medium range the first thought that most if not all Last Word users think of is "If I spam happy my Last Word they'll die". They killed Thorns reign of terror when people complained about it even though back in year one for me at least, Thorn was a non issue as when that happen I just pulled out my Red Death two shotted them in the head and left with my health at least partially intact. The Last Word has no counter from what I have experienced except for three weapons, another Last Word, MIDA Multi-tool or a Sidearm. The sidearm is an odd choice you might think but believe it or not, Last Word possesses a fire rate quite close to a sidearm. But the difference between the two is the Last Word does far more damage per shot and is ever so slightly slower. The Last Word off the top of my head kills in about 3-4 shots when spammed which is about half the clip. Sidearms which I will remind you are Special weapons kills in about 6-7 shots. I have noticed the crucible is the most balanced it's ever been but that does not mean it's an even playing field just yet. You get very tired of seeing The Last Word, 1000 Yard Stare, Party Crasher and more recently Grasp of Malok in your crucible death screen but the difference between all these weapons and the Last Word is that even though Bungie fixed the bug that made it have its perk when ADSing and its kill time was put from under a second to slightly higher it still does not change the fact that Last Word needs some work done on it. Bungie if your reading this please consider some changed for Last Word that will help other primary's stand a chance against it, it has been plaguing the crucible for far too long now even if it takes some changes. It's bad enough it has the highest fire rate of all hand cannons but why does it deserve such high damage/impact for that fire rate? Anyone who stuck to the end thank you and those who want to provide their opinion be they positive or negative to my own please do so.

  • I think TLW is fine. I still think it shouldn't have lost its bonus hipfire damage since without it, everyone just ADSs with it. It kills in 3-4 head shots like every other HC. It has the worst range though. Sidearms kill in 4 head shots, I'm pretty sure, and might fire faster than TLW.

    • I would make it keep its rof but give hawkmoons impact and a little more range (not much, weve been there, didnt like it) only while hip fireing. This would encourage the intended playstyle and reward it but wouldn't directly increase ttk, just user friendliness.

    • Literally just mentioned this elsewere but. Only reason Tlw and many other primarys seem op is the sniper body shot and switch to primary technique thats become the thing to do in destiny.

    • In all honesty, The Last Word is no longer overpowered in the least in my opinion. I have considerable bias since hand cannons are my most used weapon type and The Last Word being my most prominent and favored weapon in the game. However, let me give reasoning behind my initial statement: The Last Word has been nerfed into submission. I played in the days when it was overpowered and dealt 111 critical shots and bonus damage to the body while ADS over 75 yards. I hipfired it and could two tap people (but it was uncommon and incredibly challenging) when they focused on it's hipfire namesake. The range has dropped signifcally to the point where at 20 feet you lose 5 damage immediately and at 30 you have lost 1/3 of your damage. The gun has horrible accuracy and numerous phantom bullets because of it while trying to survive it's steep damage falloff. Whereas before I could kill shoulder charge Titans and blink shotgun chargers before they could reach me, I now lose those engagements 60/50. Firing to body requires a minimum of 6 shots and if there's a lucky headshot, it's down to 4 or 5 in it's close range. However, I am then left vulnerable to pull, hide, and reload--in most cases I'm downed if I have been ganked before I can. This gun is the opposite of overpowered. This gun can be countered by anything even in it's range. The difference is that against a skilled opponent you have to work for it if they use The Last Word--just as I assure you, The Last Word user is working to kill you just as much with every timed, patient shot. It needs a buff in every respect, and understanding it's history in pvp will show why it's just a hand cannon that fires full auto, with horrible range, inconsistent accuracy, a low magazine, and a far cry from "The Last Word" it intended to be. I appreciate you taking the time to share your opinion in a reasonable, mature manner. Feel free to counter my points and I offer the perspective of trying it out in comparison to a range-rolled hand cannon and see the results. Thank you.

      • Shotgun and doctrine. Or stay very far away from them. Doctrine's "nerf" apparently didn't go as planned, and it still rules. Unlike the last word, it is always consistent. It's the most consistent gun ever. It does what you want it to, all you've gotta do is hold down the trigger and let the destiny architects guide your hand.

          • The last word needs another accuracy buff actually. I mainly use pulses and shotties and know the last word is not op
