• My guess is $500. It will be a beast so 500 is an understandable price.

  • $500 is a stupid price for a video game console. Microsoft and Sony have both learned that the hard way. They'll go $399. They have to.

  • Why? It is equal to a $500 gaming PC.

  • Doesn't matter. Price a console at $500 and you're asking to go to the slaughterhouse. Like I said Microsoft and Sony have both learned that the hard way. This might be Microsoft's shot at turning the tables on Sony. They are trailing the PS4. They need to convince not only Xbox One users to adopt the Scorpio, but also existing PS4 owners. $500 doesn't do that. You're opening the door to Sony releasing a $399 PS4K that will outsell the $500 Xbox by a landslide margin.

  • The Neo will not touch the Scopio. That is the difference here. I say $500 is an average. It could be anywhere from $400 to $600 but probably on the lower end of that scale. Only time will tell, or leaks, leaks will tell also.

  • I agree. 500 - 650 bucks

  • The Neo doesn't have to touch the Scorpio in specs to outsell it. Microsoft is in a tougher situation. They have to have the more powerful console and match (or beat) the Neo on price. Getting PS4 owners to adopt Scorpio's instead of Neo's will be a helluva ask.

  • No, they don't need it to be cheaper. They need it to be more for your money.

  • That was Microsoft's rationale for the Xbox One's more expensive price tag. That was also Sony's rationale for the Playstation 3's more expensive price tag. How did that work out?

  • And if you truly are getting tons of more power for a more expensive price? What is wrong with that?

  • I'm not posting to say whether that is right or wrong. There's nothing wrong with it. That's beside the point. I'm talking about the history and reality of a $500 console. Will some people go buy a $500 Scorpio? Absolutely. There are people that will buy a $1000 Scorpio because they're crazy. What I am saying is that at a $500 price point Microsoft is going to struggle to get people (in large numbers) to adopt the Scorpio.

  • That's the issue. In the past, $500 consoles were not worth said $500. Now, if the Scorpio is $500, it is equivalent $500 worth of computing power.

What you just said was said the last time and the time before that. "Oh no last time was different. See now it's actually worth half a grand." Guess what will be said again ten years from now? Same rationale was used for the Xbox One. Same rationale was used for the PS3. At the end of the day people want great games on an affordable console.

  • Has there ever been a console which was 4x more powerful than the ones before it?

Really dude? It could be 10x as powerful and guess what? Doesn't matter. Third parties are still going to be developing games for the PS4 and Xbox One because that's where the install base is. Games, perception, and price are what matter. $500 consoles don't succeed. They are even more doomed if their direct competitor is $100 cheaper.

  • This is a different era. The promise of improved gameplay in the areas of 1080P60FPS and 4K30FPS are the driving force. The community got its taste of 60FPS and they want more and will pay more for it. Remember, the consensus is as of late is better hardware and both companies see that. Hench the mid console refresh. Had the community kepted on going about its business, then both companies would have just releases slimmed down versions. People crave power, so with the announcement of Scorpio, it was a sure fire thing. I will agree that Microsoft needed a stronger console. There is justification on spending 500 bucks for a 6TFLOP beast.

I will again echo the thoughts I gave to Psychic. You are both way overthinking things. At the end of the day people buy consoles for a good price and good games. They do not give a flying -blam!- about teraflops or cell processors. Now please don't take this as me saying this about you because that is often where these discussions go. This is about the general player. If the Scorpio was $500 (and we don't know so this is a purely hypothetical discussion we're having) then I am sure there will still be people who go out and buy it Day 1. Microsoft is in a tougher situation than Sony. That's just a fact because of their smaller share of the marketplace. They need to convince a userbase that isn't hungry like it was in 2013 for new consoles that they should want a new console, that this is going to simultaneously be a big hardware upgrade without abandoning the Xbox One, and convince PS4 users to dump their libraries for a Scorpio that won't be able to play their PS4 games. And you think adding a $500 price tag to that is going to be just peachy?

We will have to see since not everything will follow the past but I do see what you are saying. However I believe people will accept this console being $500.
