I think everyone is born as a blank slate and that how we are raised and what we experience shape out the general direction in which we go.

I agree with that for the most part, but I don't think we start off as completely blank slates. I don't think self-interest is taught or learned. I think it's a natural driving force hardwired into us from the moment we become self-aware and that it's to help us survive and thrive in our environment. I also believe that it's this self-interest that determines what we do.
