So,what was that exact moment when you realized Halo had a good run? Don't just generalize it to an entire game, make it that one moment when you said to yourself "Yeah this is -blam!-ing retarded".
I haven't, and a whole lot of other people haven't either. It's just the part of the community that has is far more vocal than the part that isn't.
For me it's when The Librarian told Chief that ends up the entire SPARTAN program was barely a human creation and it was actually the Forerunners who did everything. Also ends up Master Chief is the chosen one
Alright two things, firstly this was %100 acceptable within the canon. This is accomplishable with something called a Geas, which are basically biological memories or ideas that are implanted in ones race. If Halsey hadn't made the Spartans, eventually someone else would have. Spartans are more similar to Ancient Humans than you or I, and as I said this was basically destined to happen because the memories sit in every human's skull. This also means that you are incorrect in assuming that the forerunners did everything, because they were basically just giving us the advancements that our ancestors had done billions of years ago. As well the Geas was introduced to lore in 2011, about a year before halo 4 even came out. Secondly chief isn't the "Chosen One", he just happened to be the most capable human to stop the Didact at the time. If Kelly or Fred had been in his place, the Librarian would have given them the same speech and the same augments. You could say that chief just got lucky.
God dammit 343i not everything has to be related to the forerunners, also what's wrong with making the Chief just some average but bullshit lucky SPARTAN?
Well would you rather it be about the Precursors, or as you probably know them, the Flood? Or what if we just kept fighting the covenant for pretty much no reason? Exploring the forerunners and bringing them back as a major faction was the natural progression of things and people need to learn to accept that. Humanity was going to go poking around in all those relics and dissecting forerunner tech, and Spark was proof enough that the forerunners still had a presence in this universe. As well chief may be something special right now, but as I said before, he represents the next stage in human evolution. This was preordained to happen, and in a few generations all of humanity will be as he is now. We will take back the position we once held in the galaxy and become something more entirely. What's so wrong about that?

A valiant effort. But it doesn't matter if it fits in the pre established lore. When people decide to create their own headcannon bad things happen. People have this pretty -blam!-ed view that the forunners were a noble and kind race. When we really didn't know much about them. It just comes down to the fact that people don't like 343's influence on halo. Regardless of wether it is explainable or not. It's kind of ironic how much praise 1-3's story gets. When really to the people who don't live in the EU chief is just a one demensional character who gets lucky constantly. The whole covenant human conflict is skimmed pretty hard. Not much emotional development happens or depth to individual growth outside chief and cortana's bond. And even then it's not much. Arbiters story is pretty touching in itself but halo 3 pretty much skipped over any significant things about the arbiter from 2 and went straight back to focusing on chief. Lets not forget the one time Bungie actually stepped outside for a second and did reach they did a poor job representing the struggle that happened on the planet. 343 may ham fist some things or be a little more direct with things in story telling. But at least we are seeing character development and at least they are attempting to bring more of the EU in.

What's living in the EU got to do with anything?
-
So there has been a lot of lore introduced into the Halo games recently that was previously only seen in the EU. This resulted in a split in the fanbase. The one part that actually read the EU, that understood what was going on and where all this came from, and the part that hadn't read the EU, that didn't have any idea what was going on or where all this crazy stuff was coming from. That is why the Extended Universe has anything to do with this conversation.
-
Oh right, I get what you mean now. The way you worded it in your post, I thought you meant people who lived in the European Union - that's what I automatically think of when I see EU.
-
Lol I can see that now, I'm American so I didn't even realize that was a problem.
-
Easily done! :)
-
I believe he means extended universe, I was confused for a second as well
-
Gotcha!
-
I agree, the character development that we are seeing really makes Halo a story. One thing that really gets me is the people that complain that Halo is impossible to understand now without delving into the EU. But if all this stuff was explained in the games, people would complain about exposition dumps. I know that people are always going to complain, but people like me are still going to try to fight it with logic. It's a never ending struggle my friend.

That Geas is even a worse explanation. Can I just have a Master Chief that is only barely related to the forerunners because he's human? Can I just have a another story about the desperate struggle to survive and not "Learn how the forerunners been holding humanities hand for millions of years" In my honest opinion, the forerunners were just something that should have been left unexplained and "mysterious". I liked when Halo was a military sci-fi and not a fantasy sci-fi.
-
Yes but it's an explanation none the less. And frankly it doesn't matter if you don't like it, it's not your universe to develop. You can just ignore it if you want, or pretend it's not there but that would just make you ignorant. How about instead of bitching that 343 rucked it up, you take it for what it is and appreciate that they are trying to continue to expand on their world in the best way they can.
-
You have to understand why many people dislike what 343i did with Halo, myself included, is because they took a militaristic series and made it into science fantasy. Books like The Fall of Reach read like something you would find in the military history section of a book store, the books in the reclaimer saga read like a Mass Effect novel.
-
While I agree with you the Chiefs fate is kind of alluded to as far back as Halo CE based on the dialogue with Guilty Spark.
