Notice I didn't include any of that Gold/Silver, Ruby/Sapphire, Diamond/Pearl, Black/White, X/Y bullshit. That's because Generation I is real Pokemon and everything else is just a pale imitation. There are only three valid choices here: Red, Blue, and Yellow.
EDIT: Ugh, you guys... I'm being sarcastic.
The other games are not complete garbage. I do genuinely prefer Gen 1, but I can see merit in all of the Pokemon games.
Gen 2 in particular is very well-made and it preserves the style and themes introduced in Gen 1, to the point that it's pretty much just Gen 1 on steroids, and I actually enjoyed Gold/Silver/Crystal a lot... I just prefer Gen 1 because it has an element of freshness and originality that comes from being the first in the series. (And nostalgia plays a role there too - I'll admit it.)
It wasn't until Gen 3 that things really started going off the rails and changing the tone of the games, but even now, after all of the dubious evolutions this series has endured, I can still see merit in the new titles.
They just don't feel like Pokemon to me. They've changed too much. For someone who grew up with Gen 1, being sold the mantra of finding "all 151 Pokemon", it just feels like the series didn't need to continue past that point. I beat the Elite Four. I caught Mewtwo. I became the Pokemon Master, and now it's just redundant to keep doing it over and over again.
And for the record, Yellow is the best.
3 RepliesOut of the classics, Red. They're cringe worthy now and only playable if you fck with nostalgia. Many gen 1 pokemon were uninspired and pointless as well, it kinda makes me sad. Sure you can get a decent team with a good type spread, but there isn't much to choose from. Always bothered me. Having played every single Pokémon game minus the Ruby and Sapphire remakes, I can honestly say the only region I truly dislike would be Unova. Black and White? Not for me.
