Notice I didn't include any of that Gold/Silver, Ruby/Sapphire, Diamond/Pearl, Black/White, X/Y bullshit. That's because Generation I is real Pokemon and everything else is just a pale imitation. There are only three valid choices here: Red, Blue, and Yellow.
EDIT: Ugh, you guys... I'm being sarcastic.
The other games are not complete garbage. I do genuinely prefer Gen 1, but I can see merit in all of the Pokemon games.
Gen 2 in particular is very well-made and it preserves the style and themes introduced in Gen 1, to the point that it's pretty much just Gen 1 on steroids, and I actually enjoyed Gold/Silver/Crystal a lot... I just prefer Gen 1 because it has an element of freshness and originality that comes from being the first in the series. (And nostalgia plays a role there too - I'll admit it.)
It wasn't until Gen 3 that things really started going off the rails and changing the tone of the games, but even now, after all of the dubious evolutions this series has endured, I can still see merit in the new titles.
They just don't feel like Pokemon to me. They've changed too much. For someone who grew up with Gen 1, being sold the mantra of finding "all 151 Pokemon", it just feels like the series didn't need to continue past that point. I beat the Elite Four. I caught Mewtwo. I became the Pokemon Master, and now it's just redundant to keep doing it over and over again.
And for the record, Yellow is the best.
Silver and gold when you beat the game then went fight your player from the original game on the mountain top... Come on that was epic.
-
Whatever game you can get Gengar in.
-
I honestly think gen 3 was the best, while 1 and 2 were extremely nostalgic
-
My favorite is Soul Silver
-
Emerald is best.

3 RepliesOut of the classics, Red. They're cringe worthy now and only playable if you fck with nostalgia. Many gen 1 pokemon were uninspired and pointless as well, it kinda makes me sad. Sure you can get a decent team with a good type spread, but there isn't much to choose from. Always bothered me. Having played every single Pokémon game minus the Ruby and Sapphire remakes, I can honestly say the only region I truly dislike would be Unova. Black and White? Not for me.
-
Heeeyyy. You don't have Emerald.
-
Red...with a red gameboy pocket
-
I see nothing but inferiority here. Gen 2 then 3
-
Someone chose blue?

4 RepliesIm playing red currently and I like it, what's the difference between the gen 1s?
-
4 RepliesI have my gold version still
-
3 RepliesI remember getting my game boy color (Pokémon machine) It was such a great moment! I played Pokémon yellow constantly in the car. I remember having that attachable light for it for night time rides. Although I really loved get 2 with Pokémon gold as well. I honestly had just as much fun with Gen 2 as I did with Gen 1.

6 RepliesA real Pokemon fan would respect and most likely enjoy more than just one generation of their games. I loved red, yellow and blue but I am also super excited to see what they do with sun and moon.
-
2 RepliesHmmm... Gen 1 had some of the least creative pokemon, the smallest amount of moves, types, pokemon, etc, had the worst graphics, no online battles, and if im not mistaken it was one of the most unbalanced ones too But its the best one because nostalgia
-
2 RepliesI disagree. Generation 2 fits in perfectly with the originals.
-
3 RepliesSo on this next stop on our tour we have what most people call a "genwunner". However recent scientific studies have found that other video game fandoms have their own versions of "genwunners", isn't that something? Scientists have dubbed this naturally occurring phenomena as "video game elitism". Very commonly found among the PC gaming crowd. These are people who believe their opinion matters more than other people's opinion, and only they are right. Aren't they adorable? Ok, so if you'll follow me this way we can continue our tour of the forums...

Pokken - because it's more like the toons
-
Crystal is superior to these. But if you must choose gen one... T.C.G master race.

Ahh, so you are one of those people.
