After researching stats / testing out PVP on a new account, simply turning SBMM off isn't the answer. Far more people will be hurt by the change than we think. I'm not saying every gaming being ultra competitive is right either.... but we need to look a the greater good instead of what is best for the top players.

The biggest obstacle to enjoying playing Crucible isn't the skill gap, it's the quality of connection. Lag ruins everything, including KD, so it becomes an inaccurate gauge of the type of person who is playing. With a solid connection against similarly levelled players I (and I imagine most others) can satisfy my sense of accomplishment, win or lose. There are extremes of course: lobbies full of under-levelled or inexperienced players, which skews the result, similarly on a Saturday night with ToO cancelled, trying to play skirmish against top level players and getting thrashed; but that's ok. That is a consistent base. With a laggy connection (far more common) I have no answer to the teleporting, indestructible, player who regardless of skill, cannot be beaten and goes 43-0.
