The Truth about SBMM in Destiny: How it affects the community

After researching stats / testing out PVP on a new account, simply turning SBMM off isn't the answer. Far more people will be hurt by the change than we think. I'm not saying every gaming being ultra competitive is right either.... but we need to look a the greater good instead of what is best for the top players.

    • The crucible would be so much better with a ranked playlist and a non-ranked playlist. Stats only tracked in ranked playlist. Connection based only in the non-rank

      • For a guy like me that lags a ridiculous amount even though being hard wired and pushing over 100mb speeds I'd rather sbmm be a last calculation type thing if that makes sense. Like match me based on area and connection then find opponents of my skill level. I'm all for that but when I'm matched against people who are on my skill level while they're lagging around the screen is beyond frustrating.

      • I often play with my bud who isnt as good as I am, he has about a 0.8 trials kd and I have about a 1.7. Everytime he is fireteam leader we have easy games and go flawless, when I am fireteam lead, however, we often struggle. I want to be able to play with my friends, but if I do either they won't have a good time or the people we play against wont have a good time. Crucible is supposed to be fun, and now its not. I have gone to bo3 just because im so fed up with sbmm. I miss vanilla when I would consistently hold a 2 kd now I struggle to stay positive.

3v3 play lists and rumble should be s/cbmm. 6v6, or any special Playlists such as mayhem, iferno, etc. Should be pure Cbmm. There.

        • But if someone is bad they shouldn't be coddled. Top tier players are top tier for no reason other than practice and strategy, you of all people know that. If I suck I would want to get better for the sole reason that I could stomp noobs and if you are good you deserve to be rewarded for your practice with the opportunity to stomp noobs

          • Sbmm is awful. Really kills the fun of regular crucible. I don't have a single person on my friends list that actually thinks sbmm is a good thing, everyone straight up hates it. It's fun when its random and some games are sweaty while you dominate other lobbies. When every lobby is sweaty and it's a constant struggle to get a barely acceptable score it becomes unfun. There are no highs and lows just a constant stream of MEH. Also it's fun when your bullets consistently register and hit detection feels good, that cannot be said for the current crucible enviroment outside of trials of osiris.

          • It was never in this state in year 1. I'm not an amazing player like some but I've spent enough time in tne crucible to notice the change. I would spend a few hours a day in the crucible before TTK dropped. Enjoyed getting whooped by better players because I could at least learn something and work on it. All my friends used to play it with me and we had fun, but now? Warping, invincible red bar players on the other team nearly every game, shots not registering, getting hit through walls etc. It's unplayable. Why am I getting matched up with Brazilians, Russians and Qatar when I'm in the UK? When I'm with my friends and we do have rare legit games, they get stomped and they give up after a while, it's no fun for them, and it's no fun for me when I see them not having a good time because they're put in the same skill bracket as me. It actually makes me feel like crap and I'm spending less and less time in the crucible now. Which is a shame because I used to enjoy it, solo or with friends. Feel like I'm being slowly pushed away from it though. Sorry for the long post but it is something which I'm pretty passionate about. I do actually love this game and really want it to get better.

"CBMM is good for some and not everyone" What............................. Lagfests are NEVER ok. You keep viewing all this as if Destiny was not meant to be a casual game but it is, just like CoD and that's why they also removed SBMM from there soon after they implemented it. At least what about they let us choose from the settings if we want MM based on connection or skill, you know like in Halo... a much more competitive FPS without the BS gimmicks Destiny has. Had to compare it with Halo cause you keep making it sound as if Destiny was the big shit of competitive games.

          • You didn't address the lag once in your video. SBMM breaks the dwindling player base into even smaller chunks, causing latency as we have to go further to find opponents. Nor did you mention the awful things that happen when a skilled player plays with unskilled friends. The most skilled players ELO is taken into consideration so the unslilled friends get crushed. You only looked at the issue from the perspective of someone who only solo drops 100% of the time. Sorry mtashed. You need to open your eyes. Your research is flawed. Maybe this is why you have 0 likes on this forums post.

            • How bout the elephant in the room? Lag. It has been a plague in this game forever and sbmm adds to this issue. It is good that they convinced you to come out on their behalf but seriously I thought you were kidding about getting in on the checks and private servers. I realize they painted most of the red bars green but the lag issues that their matchmaking system carries are the problem. I could care less who gets matched with who. Some how we survived it for a year. I am sure we can again and if not then we can move on. Trying to run this system on peer to peer system is not something that can be maintained. I sure hope the check was a nice one.

            • Mtashed - I don't think I know of a single well known youtuber or streamer with a better attitude and more love for this game, and you nailed this one in so many ways. Now that I'm done sucking your dick, here It goes - My one and only issue with SBMM vs CBMM is the "red bar gods". I personally love the competitive play of SBMM, but it sucks when the difference between me having a 3.0 vs 1.something in a match is the connection. My internet is amazing and I live in the Seattle area so having plenty of people to face, it's frustrating, especially in the 3v3 types. Thoughts?

Nice post, and good idea with feeling it out from the standpoint of a new account. Here's my view on it. I don't know if it's truly SBMM to blame, or some other matchmaking criteria, but the main issue for many of us is the lag. My overall kd isn't spectacular and isn't my main goal of playing (although I don't try to play stupid and wreck it). That being said, I'd sooner get pummeled by someone in your tier than play these lag matches. For me, PvP has become PvC (connection). I can step into a match and know within maybe 10 seconds if I'm going to be fighting guardians, or a connection. This next part is sad---------> I've developed "LAG STRATEGIES" when I know I'm in a horrible latency match. Yes, if I know I'm fighting a connection, I will do the following: - I'll play extra campy - I'll only try to snipe someone running away from me - I won't even scan/peak a snipe lane I think is empty unless a teammate enters it first and I know it's safe - I'll follow people who are chasing someone to team shoot - That team shooting often leads to kill stealing - I'll only run my dominant weapons (I hate the word meta)
yes, even I hate myself for playing like that :-(
I'm also mature enough to know some of my "decent" matches (recent 9, 10, 14, 16kd matches) might not be reflecting my true skill with this game. Doing good on a scoreboard doesn't make it any better to me personally. Shady/high latency matches kill this game for me. I'm wasting 12.5min of my life if I stay in a match where I'm routinely getting sniped through rocks, falling over dead without hearing a shot fired, falling over dead for no reason then seeing a door open and a shotgun come through, and seeing endless hit registration issues. I love this game and what it was before things got shady in December or whenever it was. I'll take a beating from a good player in PvP with a smile on my face (and often make a friend from a shared post game gg), but I'll feel eternally "meh" about shady PvC losses as well as wins. -

              • On the fence much? I guess researching those stats didn't result in anything empirical. Overall you're telling us to be empathetic but be careful you're sounding awfully close like you're carrying Bungie's water. They made the changes to SBMM they can change them back. The reason they won't change them is to protect their revenue stream/active player base. But what they may not have realized is core gamers dwindling which will effect new gamers. The whole refer-a-friend program was built on this concept. Right now they're benefitting from lack of competition but when there's a real threat, a lot of core gamers will jump ship like before April.
