another similarity is that that heart was being used to create vex the same way it seems that the blights create more taken.
But do we know exactly what blights are? We'd be able to understand their similarity better if we knew exactly what they are. Just from the taken king story line it seems like they might be portals that travel straight into the darkness or the deep. That would explain why it spawns taken and nothing else and why it debuffs us. Ask cayde says that they leak darkness like a spigot. What do you guys think the blights are?

They explain it in the story missions. Blights do not create more taken. They act as an interdimensional portal, if I remember correctly.

It looks like a floating ball of that spawn liquid that the hive would normally rise up out of. Some kind of fluid that can generate an organism. The hive are like bugs so their armor (maybe even their bodies) might be made of chitin. Maybe the hive can manipulate chitin so it can rise up from a pool of chitin that has yet to be made into a body? The taken are also some kind of membrane. So maybe the taken use this kind of transport too except inside the giant floating ball is a keyhole(or something of that sort) that goes through the deep and into wherever Oryx stashes his taken.
