Heh, everyone's death in Reach was predetermined. That was the whole point, the depiction of the catastrophic UNSC defeat there.
I remember being disappointed that the same didn't happen in ODST, war stories don't make much sense to me if it's only the bad guys who die.
But really the saddest Halos were the Strike/Assault mobile games

Did strike even have a story? It seemed like a poorly written fanfiction by someone who'd never rad the books or played the game. Though assault was sad once they added that final mission.
