  • Because not only did I really like kat(she was one of the first really good female characters featured in the games so i connected to that) but the way she dies and the tone the game has after that. Kat's death is the cruelty of war. It comes out of nowhere and there's no grand sacrifice. Like most soldiers. Sam dies because is suit is punctured, James floats off forever into space, and so many Spartan IIIs were just gunned down. It's the reality of a 25 year long war that not every death is accompanied by a covenant ship being destroyed or a Scarab falling. And as an aspect of the story it is the turning point. Right before she dies she says that she knows they're loosing and want to know if they've lost. At the time Carter has no answer but in that final part of the level when Noble is walking out and Carter is carrying her you have an answer. They've lost. Kat and Carter were the last two original members of Noble and her death breaks the team. It's the moment that hope for Reach dies.
