Do People Oversell Dark Souls' Difficulty?

Dark Souls is made out to be this ridiculously difficult game with bosses that will annihilate you again and again.
I've been playing Dark Souls for the past week or so, and I've come to the conclusion that the majority of players are simply overselling the whole thing to make it seem like it's nearly impossible to play. The only reason I can imagine this game being nearly as difficult as everyone claims it to be is if someone isn't at all noticing and adapting to enemy attack patterns, or if they're taking on areas or enemies that they're entirely unprepared for. New Game+ and beyond, however, may be different, but I've yet to experience that for myself.
What are your thoughts? Is it as hard as people say, or is it all just a huge over-exaggeration?

  • If you don't know how to dodge of course it's hard but for the lost part the dark souls series, including bloodborne, was pretty easy.

  • I picked up 2 blind. Didn't know crap about the game. I made about 6 different characters the first 2 hours of play. I had no idea what was going on. When I watched walkthroughs and talked to friends it got easier. But it is basically unforgiving to people that don't know. I watched a walkthrough of 1 and the guy basically speed ran the thing only healing from fall damage because he had every location memorized and knew which order to get items. He made it look like Sonic the HedgeHog.

    • Once you get to NG+ THEN you will know what the term "Prepare to die" and "Welcome to hell" mean. And just think, that's only NG+ ! I'm all the way in NG+7 , the hardest difficulty. One wrong step, and you get smashed by anything. And I do mean ANYTHING.

      • Yeah, though it is difficult it does take a bit of skill and trial and error to play. I think you just have to be patient that's all

      • Yeah, mostly. They should really be focusing on the inconvenience of the lack of a pause option.

No, it's as hard as people say IF you don't cheat and go in completely blind with no outside help. Now, I consider the game an open world. IMO asking for help, reading player notes, sharing secrets is part of the game. But obviously once you've played the game enough you can get through it much easier. Most of the people who say the game is easy 1) Summoned 2) Used outside help 3) Have played a souls game before +some luck (Even if they won't admit it) Not saying there is anything wrong with the above, when you've tried a boss 50 times at some point it's not cheesy to summon Solaire or ask for help. Although I'm not a fan of the franchise going all "haha you gonna die over and over our game is really hard!!!". Then they focus too much on killing you and you get things like Anor Londo Archers, then actually mechanically difficult things. And I'd say the game is more punishing and complex, than just "hard".

          • They do now yeah But go back to Demon Souls when it first launched, no one knew what to expect and the game play style was alot harder then now(causal influx for lack of a better term)

Demon souls was alright, I still have it and yet to complete it. I was half way through with dark souls, but someone stole it. Never had a shot at DS2 and now DS3 will be out or is out. (I don't keep track of these things) But, yeah! I feel like they over sell the difficulty, there are spots that can be difficult if you forgot what to expect around the corner. Bosses can be quite difficult, but still fun and you just have to figure the mechanics before the mechanics kill you. In short, I poured most of my time into FFXIV and Destiny. I should have finished the first two while I had dark souls. Edit: Actually, I'll check out my trophy list when I'm not playing to see where I was on dark souls cause I am not completely sure.

          • For a fresh off the boat, yeah. For a seasoned souls player, not really. I think it has a learning curve that when you get used to it you get pretty good but before that welcome to Hell il take your jacket, souls and probably fill you with rage.

          • It's true, if you play it blind you WILL die fairly quickly to most anything. I prefered Demon's Souls as it had the right "elements" for me, but Dark Souls was just irritating sometimes. To those who have played blind, lower town boss gate to the enclosed courtyard vs a capra demon and 2 direwolf style enemies.

            • Dark souls is a good and easy game as soon as you get use to it. However new game +3 and up get really challenging. That's when you prepare to die.

              • It got more to do with people being casual first person shooters and let's be honest here, pewdiepie made dark souls big
*obligatory I played dark souls before it was famous here*
Which led to other YouTubers playing it. So more of the casuals got a hold of the game meaning the majority didn't know how to play. Thinking they could just pick it up and play like a first person shooter. Not bothering to actually learn how to play and like you said, adapting.

                • I've played and beat all the souls games and bloodborne at least to ng+4 and I have to say that the enemies will become a lot harder than the bosses. The damage spike on higher playthroughs is ridiculous. However, the most powerful thing in any of them is lag in pvp lol. But yeah, I find the enemies to become harder than bosses.

                • Most people who try the souls series call it impossible because they don't bother to learn how to play the games and just run into every encounter face first and mashing r1. That's probably why Bloodborne was much more accessible, because it encouraged that.

                • It isn't hard at all. Unlike most games where you mindlessly shoot things, Dark Souls actually requires thought, skill and strategic play like old games. The cod crowd call it hard because they don't know how to play it.

                  • Once you get to the blacksmith and upgrade your weapons so they do some actual damage, then it becomes easier; however, it's only the beginning. The game does get more difficult and even spikes up a couple times as you get further.
