To be fair, if people witnessed an employee openly mocking a customer anywhere else, that employee would get fired. I realize this situation is different, of course, but it's some food for thought.

Completely false. Banter, where appropriate, is not a sackable offence. OP wasnt offended, and his thread was light hearted to begin with. Ergo: appropriate. Lighten up, geesh
-
You don't need a reason to get sacked in At Will employment regimes. I've seen people sacked for less.
-
Well, this isnt one of them. :)
-
Also, it is not completely false, working under the assumption that the employee actually was mocking the customer.
-
Ok, if it was mockery (what DeeJ said wasnt, at all, the OP was amused and idiots who werent even involved started acting like victims) then it would depend on the severity. Action would range from a quiet word to one side, to disciplinary action, suspension pending investigation, or at the worst sacking due to gross misconduct. But it really would depend on the severity of the offence at the managers discretion. Racial abuse? Out the door. Mild prodding? Probably no more than a "Dont do it again".
-
I agree, there are degrees to the severity of this.

I didn't really follow that thread, I've mostly just seen other people talking about it, so it came across that the guy was offended. It looked harmless enough when I saw it the first time, so I agree, this was fine.

Not entirely true. I was a fast food manager for a while, sometimes you have to stoop to their level to get a point across.
