First of all, yes, this is pretty unprofessional. Instead of addressing this person's complaints and releasing an update that isn't vague and full of "we'll tell you later", he decides to go the smartass route.
And as community manager, yes, he pretty much is obligated to be professional, in some cases even more so than other employees. He represents the face of Bungie to every player and fan here. If he presents himself as unprofessional, people will think that that behavior represents Bungie as a whole.
Yes, I did think OP made it out to be worse than it is (this isn't necessarily mocking), but it still doesn't excuse DeeJ's behavior here.

so let me get this right, deej having a sense of humor, comments on a wildly untrue post, is unprofessional, yet biting the head off a duck is acceptable, and not in any way cruelty to animals? seems legit.

To me, and probably to a lot of other people, it just comes off as a smart remark. And did you really think OP would actually bite the head off of a duck if DeeJ didn't give him worthwhile news? It's most likely (at least, I hope it is) hyperbole.
-
the thing you missed about my post, is you called deej unprofessional, for answering and obvious joke post with a joke reply. i don't see this as unprofessional at all. it was and is a joke, just like the op's initial post. no one called the op on animal cruelty, but deej is unprofessional. double standards. its not fair to deej, and he catches more shit than any one else on here, and usually for no good reason.

However amusing it is to have someone at Bungie actually respond to something... A sarcastic/ troll response to a post that is obviously hyperbole (from an exasperated fan) is pretty disrespectful.
