Guardians,
The refinement of your competitive ecosystem continues. As you battle each other in the Crucible and discuss those experiences on the forum, we're taking stock of your reactions and sharing them with the team. Today, that same team is sharing back to you with some news on what's changing.
Effective Immediately: New Matchmaking settings are live in Control.
We've taken additional steps to increase the emphasis on connection quality. Skill ratings will be less a factor in finding you a match. Lag will be even further diminished. Enjoying a game with your friends who are more/less skilled than you are will be easier, but your opponents will be more random, so you will stand a better chance of getting your ass kicked - or vice versa. There is still some form of protection to insulate the casual players among us from the most hardcore, but those considerations will have much less impact on the technical quality of the matchup.
We have also extended Damage Referee (click and scroll down to "Out of Bounds" for context) to govern the impact that poor connections have on matches in Clash, Rumble, and Freelance 3v3. It is still live in Control, where it was originally deployed.
As always, your visceral real-time reactions to these changes in a live-fire exercise are more important than the math. Sound off and let us know how it feels. For now, your test-bed for the new settings is exclusive to Control. Get in there and control the zones. Let us know if you'd like to see these changes deployed far and wide.
It's an ongoing process, and you're the most important part of it. Thank you!
UPDATE (02/18/2016): Matchmaking tuning has been revised to prioritize finding people who are close to your locality in the interest of further reducing lag.

When did special ammo on spawn in clash get taken away?
-
For my own feedback I would like the developers at bungie to do away with SBMM for playlists like trials, idc if they stomp me (I usually win or go 8-1) but I WILL NOT gain any experience or lessons from a laggy match, so make crucible the unforgiving place it should be and throw me to the wolves
-
At this point ANY change to crucible is better
-
Your game is still trashy and laggy with this. Go back to Y1 MMing
-
hmm but what happens if you are playing together with guys with bad connection? this matchmaking takes care about the host's connection or an average of the team? i mean into a team of six players I doubt everyone has an equal connection. please DeeJ could u give us some specific answer about it? thanks :3 ~peace & love

Honestly I enjoyed PvP a lot more when it was skill based, rarely did I ever have any issues with others and connections. Now that this whole "connection" based PvP is live I find I'm playing against more people with crappy connections. I am usually in the green, sometimes yellow and I see more red bars than ever. Honestly going to connection based matchmaking was a step in the wrong direction, but that's just one guardians opinion among the thousands out there.

Sweet. I'll try it out tonight.
-
Revert Trials to year 1 style.
-
Keep up the work on PvP. It's getting much better.
-
PvP is definately becoming more of a great place to hang back with friends. You guys have been doing some great work recently!
-
Deej, I have a question. What's PvE and can you eat it?
-
Haven't tried it out yet but this is a great update. As someone who plays with friends who are below average at PVP, I'm glad they won't be continually put at a disadvantage. Good job of Bungie responding directly to player concerns on the forums.
-
In before someone tells you they are done with Destiny.
-
Honestly your destroying everything you've built up, your matchmaking is terrible! Very sad time! Oh well who gives a shit Friday is the open beta of The Division sooooooo long Bumgie
-
Who asked for this in the first place?
-
Deej, what's your favorite Herbalife Shake?
-
Thanks for trying. You would never ever please everyone.
-
Have the new matchmaking setting been applied to clash? I've just been having a lot of lag and all I have been playing is clash.
Sorry if this was already addressed in a previous update
-
Too bad its only in control. Would actually get on and play if it was in place for Rift...
-
Thank you for continuing to work on this to hopefully make it better and better throughout the process and for keeping us up to date on the changes and hopefully more info on the outcomes soon.
-
Was playing control yesterday 4 red bars on opposing team all teleporting around, top 4 scores. Damage ref lol
-
Damage referee doesn't exist. Never seen any difference. People who lag still have advantages and do damage and people lag with green bars. I have a netduma and I can see the pings of my opponents real time and they are in the hundreds m/s range. The only reason I'm opening my geo filter is to get people in the lobby late during Europe's prime time.
-
Why not just make game modes exclusive to being skill based? Ik as a fact when I'm playing control i don't want a competitive atmosphere, iron banner on the other hand deserves competitive matchmaking. Just make standardized crucible purely connection based matchmaking
-
Please put these changes in Rift and Salvage. Those two game modes are getting really bad because of horrible teammates you're matched with and getting matched up against a team of amazing players on the other team.
As always, your visceral real-time reactions to these changes in a live-fire exercise are more important than the math.
I'm going to call bullshit on that one. Example, the general feeling was that auto rifles aren't feeling strong enough. The change was 0.04%.
