Matchmaking Update - 2/17/2016

Guardians, The refinement of your competitive ecosystem continues. As you battle each other in the Crucible and discuss those experiences on the forum, we're taking stock of your reactions and sharing them with the team. Today, that same team is sharing back to you with some news on what's changing. [b]Effective Immediately[/b]: New Matchmaking settings are live in [b][u]Control[/u][/b]. We've taken additional steps to increase the emphasis on connection quality. Skill ratings will be less a factor in finding you a match. Lag will be even further diminished. Enjoying a game with your friends who are more/less skilled than you are will be easier, but your opponents will be more random, so you will stand a better chance of getting your ass kicked - or vice versa. There is still some form of protection to insulate the casual players among us from the most hardcore, but those considerations will have much less impact on the technical quality of the matchup. We have also extended Damage Referee ([url=https://www.bungie.net/7_This-Week-At-Bungie--02042016/en/News/News?aid=44307]click and scroll down to "[b]Out of Bounds[/b]" for context[/url]) to govern the impact that poor connections have on matches in [b]Clash[/b], [b]Rumble[/b], and [b]Freelance 3v3[/b]. It is still live in [b]Control[/b], where it was originally deployed. As always, your visceral real-time reactions to these changes in a live-fire exercise are more important than the math. Sound off and let us know how it feels. For now, your test-bed for the new settings is exclusive to [b]Control[/b]. Get in there and control the zones. Let us know if you'd like to see these changes deployed far and wide. It's an ongoing process, and you're the most important part of it. Thank you! [b]UPDATE (02/18/2016): Matchmaking tuning has been revised to prioritize finding people who are close to your locality in the interest of further reducing lag.[/b]

  • There is no reason to wait. Any fixes that add more prioritization to connection quality for matchmaking should be implemented across the board. STAT!

      so now it's like 80% CBMM? Bungie is progressing, but I'd really only like to see 100% CBMM.

    • Whether I'm getting matched up with casual players or those super skilled people doesn't matter to me as much as lag does. Chances are, on a 6v6 match, you'll have duds and winners on both sides of the fence. But that won't matter if it doesn't work properly. Skilled based? How's about region based?

          • I enjoyed SBMM, I have an average K.D, so I got into matches with people on my skill level within my region with no problem with connection. I enjoyed every match because as someone with 1700 NLB kills I could careless about KD.

          • My feedback so far is: When I go into control with a few friends who are less skilled and experienced I completely dominate the match with BTRD and consistently end up with double my teammate's kill count and like a 4+ kd. That's insane. And honestly I didn't realize there were that many people out there who aren't good at all in pvp. When I go in with an experienced team it feels more evenly matched. Honestly. When I get killed I can see my error, rather than feeling like chop liver. When I go in by myself it feels very very sweaty. Sucks. Lastly, the lag, frame lag, frame rate drop off, melee detection...those things ARE an issue. Before the update melees would register too late. Now they register before the guy even hits me. Especially shoulder charge. I'd have killed the guy but I'm already dead and he's still a foot away from me.. By frame lag I mean I can be shooting a guy and all of a sudden he's a couple feet to the left or right. That happens like every 10th frame in 6v6. Not so much in 3v3. And not in every game. But it's enough to become very frustrating and quit playing crucible, only to quit playing destiny because there's nothing else to do in game. Happened last night. Hopefully some one read this.

          • To all the players complaint about matchmaking going back to cbmm, seriously it's not just the 1% that's been experiencing lag, since December my games have been getting laggier and laggier. I don't even have 1.0 kd so I'm average at best. I'd much rather have a good connection to who I'm playing with so if I shoot them it actually registers instead of lag letting them kill me or we trade kills.

          • Just no, revert it back. You are making it worse in pvp. If u want to fix a thing, fix the freaking icebreaker/sidearm "glitch". Suggestion is that u cant get a bullet in icebreker until the box itself spawns in for special ammo. Same with sidearm.

            • SBMM was the worst thing you guys have done to date! Year one had lag, sure, but this new system only worsened that lag to where im not even doing damage to people. People tanking supers, headshots from a sniper, melees just not registering..... Its just pathetic. It has gotten better, but it is still problematic

                • My tracking says those changes have been in place at least in part lately any way. Our matches were getting very "local" the last day or so. Good to see it being made official none the less. I sure hope the damage referee starts working better soon. I had not noticed anything in matches so far the kings of lag were still on the throne but I will be watching.

                    So since they're nerfing Crucible for people to bring their friends, can you also nerf King's Fall HM so people can bring their friends without getting wrecked by Oryx?

                        • odd how many people would prefer bad connections with equal skill.. this to me was always frustrating.. why have people you are equal too yet lag causing mis shots etc.. i'd rather be stomped by my competition but, when I shoot, the shot lands.. fair and equal for every player.. I tend to play with my clan with various skill levels so if we have a top tier player with us it never mattered anyways with sbmm as we always got top tier talent, now its just random and far better.

                            sooo I've always had awesome connection and now I find myself lagging with a lobby full of green bars. anyone else having this problem?
