Guardians,
The refinement of your competitive ecosystem continues. As you battle each other in the Crucible and discuss those experiences on the forum, we're taking stock of your reactions and sharing them with the team. Today, that same team is sharing back to you with some news on what's changing.
Effective Immediately: New Matchmaking settings are live in Control.
We've taken additional steps to increase the emphasis on connection quality. Skill ratings will be less a factor in finding you a match. Lag will be even further diminished. Enjoying a game with your friends who are more/less skilled than you are will be easier, but your opponents will be more random, so you will stand a better chance of getting your ass kicked - or vice versa. There is still some form of protection to insulate the casual players among us from the most hardcore, but those considerations will have much less impact on the technical quality of the matchup.
We have also extended Damage Referee (click and scroll down to "Out of Bounds" for context) to govern the impact that poor connections have on matches in Clash, Rumble, and Freelance 3v3. It is still live in Control, where it was originally deployed.
As always, your visceral real-time reactions to these changes in a live-fire exercise are more important than the math. Sound off and let us know how it feels. For now, your test-bed for the new settings is exclusive to Control. Get in there and control the zones. Let us know if you'd like to see these changes deployed far and wide.
It's an ongoing process, and you're the most important part of it. Thank you!
UPDATE (02/18/2016): Matchmaking tuning has been revised to prioritize finding people who are close to your locality in the interest of further reducing lag.

Just get rid of SBMM

Alright so here's the thing. I see comments asking for a social playlist and a ranked. This is a good idea, but it needs to be implement right. For example, Gears of War (my favorite PvP, no offense) put in social along with ranked matchmaking. The problem is eventually the majority of the player base just played social because it offered the same XP as ranked with quicker matchmaking and less sweaty games. There wasn't enough incentive to bother playing the ranked playlist. Here's an example of the right way, which I'm sure you're familiar with. Halo 3 (my second favorite PvP) had a social list and ranked. The social offered less sweaty games and you could earn XP, but not rank (prior to TU2 giving playlist ranks/Not effecting Global Rank). If you wanted that coveted general rank you were in the ranked playlist going head to head with others after the same prize. Now I know that these two games have different ranking systems but respective to their own games one was much better at having a balance in the population of social and ranked playlists. If the team decides to go this route please put more incentive into playing in ranked playlists. Whether it's adding visible ranking or better rewards, there needs to be something to show for your time and skill in the competitive crucible. Otherwise I think you'll find your time wasted and that playlist empty.

Edited by MRBOSSHL: 2/17/2016 11:07:13 PMTHANK YOU DEEJ!!! I remember back in year one when I was able to get 30-40 kills using suros regime (This was in August 2015) it was super fun and no one was arguing now all I see on forums is OMG MIDA IS TOO OP, OR TLW IS TOO GOOD AGAIN. But honestly stop acting like a 3 year old and play the game,Heck you might even get better because of this. Yes there may be some flaws like icebreaker/sidearm glitch that need to be fixed but that can be fixed and we can move on. STOP ACTING LIKE A 3 YEAR OLD AND GROW A BRAIN!!!
-
just go back to matchmaking pre taken king and everything will be fine....
-
How about, take the shit out completely and quit using us as test rats for your shitty matchmaking tweaking. Make a ranked play list if you want people to play competitive.

Cya later, Cryhards. Whining about SBMM in a game where it doesnt even truly concentrate on the rankings is simply put, stupid. I cant help but laugh at the moronic casuals(yes, you ARE indeed morons) for implying that SBMM is more important than CBMM in this game, when A) they dont put in the nearly the time NOR effort to warrant such remarks, and B)have obviously never witnessed manipulation on a grand scale, such as the time ToO peeps were sandbagging their levels to attract - you guessed it - LOWER LEVEL PLAYERS to then beat them down and get their flawless. I honestly enjoy the mixed bag, i just cannot stand lag, and yes, its not just a top tier problem, im not Dr. Flawless either, but i loathe, LOATHE shooting another player with precision only to watch their shield remain untouched, or a bladedancer move from one side of the map to another in two swipes, straight vanishing, and reappearing(with no animation whatsoever) blink Titans, Invisa-locks, etc. The priority is finally in its right place, and people who piss and moan about needing to face "peers" (heres looking at you, filthy casual whiners) are outed for what they truly are:afraid of random, quality connected competition.
-
Thank you, DeeJ. It doesn't matter how much skill a player exhibits if their peer-to-peer (P2P) average connection is poor, causing hit delay or just not registering hits at all. Lag compensation can only do so much, but we need dedicated servers for PvP, please Bungie I beg you! And before everyone starts a pissing contest, please know that just because you pay your ISP a lot of money for a really high Mbp/s connection, doesn't mean you have a good ping time. Ping time is wayyy more important than having a ton of bandwidth (Mbp/s), when playing online multiplayer. For instance, I only have a 10Mbp/s connection but I have ~30ms ping time; that's a very good ping time. I have friends that I've helped that pay lots of money for 100Mbp/s connections that had 100-500ms ping times (which is really bad). You have to optimize your router (i.e., hard wired Ethernet connection from router to console, DNS settings, static IP, UPnP or port forwarding or DMZ, NAT Type 1 or 2 if you have NAT Type 3 that is BAD, etc...). If you think you suck at PvP, it may not be your fault, it could just be your ping time sucks which in turn makes you feel like you suck. Same goes for the display you game on. Destiny runs @ 30fps, and 1 video frame is = to 33ms of input lag @ 30fps, so if you game on a monitor with </=33ms input lag, you're golden. If you're gaming on a monitor with >33ms input lag, you're going to be 1+ video frame(s) behind the best players, which will likely get you killed if you both see one another at exactly the same time in-game. If Destiny ran @ 60fps, we would need to game on a display that was </=16.7ms input lag in order to be truly competitive, so keep that in mind. If Destiny 2 (or whatever it's called) is released only on PS4 & XBox One (current gen hardware) it could very well run @ 60fps. TL;DR - in short, CBMM should absolutely take precedence over SBMM. If you're not doing well in PvP, take the time and research how to improve your ping time and/or purchase a better monitor to game on. If you want a larger screen, Sony makes the best gaming TVs, there's even projectors that are excellent for gaming. I hope this message provides some helpful insight to the community and I look forward to seeing you all in PvP. Respectfully, Str8___G

Edited by Hemphlev: 2/17/2016 10:40:38 PMI'm surprised people get so butt hurt over losing. Do You know what the best pvp player in destiny gets? Or even the top 1000?
You get nothing. You lose. Good day, sir.
If you want to go have fun, the. Go have fun. If winning = fun, then you may need to reevaluate your priorities.

Thanks bungie

Plays exactly the same, the needless protection of those who house negative K/D has made crucible an unbalanced mess and will remain so until they fully revert back to the old match making. Granted that resulted in a few blowouts, of which I was on the receiving end of my fair share. But crucible for the most part plays horribly these days. Pointlessly intense match-ups In a supposedly causal game. All they have manage to do is extract any aspect of fun for a devoted fan base in order to protect a handful of players who for the most part are pve focused.
-
Hi deej "The division" goes live tomorrow will you be playing the Beta? I Will. Haha.. Take lessons Bungo GG.

Edited by BStanley92: 2/17/2016 10:02:39 PMI love this game. I love crucible, tho I don't get to play pvp as much as I would like. I don't mind sweaty games, just not every game. The worst thing about sbmm is that I have friends that won't go into the crucible with me anymore. It sucks. They don't want to get put into the lobbies that I get put in because they get slaughtered. So instead of doing stupid challenges with each other with shit weapons, I have to go in with my friends that are on similar levels, which means I have to go full tryhard for a chance at winning, or not being completely slaughtered. We've been spending more time in trials, simply because it is less sweaty than standard crucible. The worst part is, I'm not a top tier player. Not even close. Yet apparently I'm good enough that I can't have fun anymore.

Thanks Bungie, that is awe..
Weasel Error
LOL the responses to this post just go to show that there is zero consistency or continuity in community opinion. The community has no idea what it wants and Bungie just do their best to mollify you all. I prefer them to trust the math because they know how their game works and the community doesn't.

What is really starting to get to me is when I go in with crap weapons just to fool around, my teammates are almost always retarded. 'I know rushing straight through this door will lead us into a bunch of nades and sniper fire, and the same thing has happened every round, but lets do it again! There's no way the could do the same thing in EVERY round of elimination, right?' That seems to be my team's mindset in every game I play. They never change strategy, and die in the first 10 seconds of every round, leaving me in 1v3's all the time. If I can't single handedly carry my team, we lose. U can't go in and have fun because I always am put on the spot, and have to sweat my ass off. The problem isn't skill bases or connection based, its that the vast majority of players are just WAAAAAAAAAY too bad at the game. It's to the point where I can't have fun unless I'm with friends that don't suck. No one else ever has a MIC, no one ever changes failing strategies, and barely anyone knows how to do anything but stare down the scope of a sniper. I guess this is what you get when you have a well above average dtr and elo rating...

6 Control Games this morning (I live in Europe, France) and no victory because of terrible team with me...Fed up with being the only K/D over 1.00 or less under (0.93, 0.86 because Iam the only one capable to kill but alone in my team)) in my team....I was 1 vs 6 or 2 /3 vs 6....ANGRY TIME.....Plus : red connections have always a terrible advantage on me who has a GREEN connection...You call this damage referee ? No effect in France.....I LOVE so much playing Crucible but if I continue to play with bad players or red connections advantages, I will quit this mode. K/D ratio games + connection quality will be good. Or, if there is no skill rankings, make random a little bit equilibrate after 2 or 3 loss.
-
Who cares! I wish you guys put this much effort into giving us new content

I agree with all of these fixes... but still disliked the thread... because Deej.

2nd of the 17th month update.
-
To all you people who disagree with this. We need to be as loud and complain as much as these people who like it. Evidently that's the only way to get bungie to listen.
-
Thank you, just thank you
-
Stop changing it by a percentile. REMOVE SBMM.
-
right on. 👍

Honestly I enjoyed PvP a lot more when it was skill based, rarely did I ever have any issues with others and connections. Now that this whole "connection" based PvP is live I find I'm playing against more people with crappy connections. I am usually in the green, sometimes yellow and I see more red bars than ever. Honestly going to connection based matchmaking was a step in the wrong direction, but that's just one guardians opinion among the thousands out there.

A ranked and unranked playlist would probably be best. This way, when you want to get better, challenge yourself, or even get better rewards, you go to ranked. And when you want to just play a nice game of crucible with some friends or want to relax, go to unranked. Ranked would be primarily SBMM and unranked would be primarily CBMM. And it could be switched easily. We should be able to switch between them like we do in raids or missions from normal mode to hard mode.
