Guardians,
The refinement of your competitive ecosystem continues. As you battle each other in the Crucible and discuss those experiences on the forum, we're taking stock of your reactions and sharing them with the team. Today, that same team is sharing back to you with some news on what's changing.
Effective Immediately: New Matchmaking settings are live in Control.
We've taken additional steps to increase the emphasis on connection quality. Skill ratings will be less a factor in finding you a match. Lag will be even further diminished. Enjoying a game with your friends who are more/less skilled than you are will be easier, but your opponents will be more random, so you will stand a better chance of getting your ass kicked - or vice versa. There is still some form of protection to insulate the casual players among us from the most hardcore, but those considerations will have much less impact on the technical quality of the matchup.
We have also extended Damage Referee (click and scroll down to "Out of Bounds" for context) to govern the impact that poor connections have on matches in Clash, Rumble, and Freelance 3v3. It is still live in Control, where it was originally deployed.
As always, your visceral real-time reactions to these changes in a live-fire exercise are more important than the math. Sound off and let us know how it feels. For now, your test-bed for the new settings is exclusive to Control. Get in there and control the zones. Let us know if you'd like to see these changes deployed far and wide.
It's an ongoing process, and you're the most important part of it. Thank you!
UPDATE (02/18/2016): Matchmaking tuning has been revised to prioritize finding people who are close to your locality in the interest of further reducing lag.

Edited by Littleweasel: 2/20/2016 1:50:49 PMthe match making is worse that it even has been, and keeps getting worse the more you guys (Bungie) claim you are working on it. with all the time you guys claim to be working on it, it should have gotten better not worse. so not only do the casual pvp'ers have to put up with the mlg want a be's, now we have to put up with this crap.

Edited by shonik09: 2/20/2016 12:45:58 PMYou put the date wrong. Should be 17/2/2016

Hmm, 3 games of Control this morning. 2 with multiple red bar players. By this morning I mean 1230pm CET and as a player based in the UK at this time of day I should have more than 3 players to choose from. I did report those players I feel were exploiting their connections to not only top their team but also manage to do so inspite of their connection. I know there's bound to be a "git gud scrub" comment, or a "use the meta" comment (my choice, don't want to run TLW or Mida). But teleporting, stuttering players, getting kills 3 seconds after they have died (with melee attacks) is unacceptable Bungie. Last Iron Banner was an improvement in terms of overall connection, but there seems to be just as many obvious work arounds. I also realise the ban hammer has been swung a few times, I'd like to know how many players have received BANS as a percentage of the total "live" player community.

Doesn't matter how much u polish a turd its still a turd...your just fiddling with something thats fundamentally broken.

Edited by Dona: 2/20/2016 4:56:33 AMDeej, tell the big boss that the community just wants to have fun cos right now trials is not so fun anymore anyway... I just wanna have fun not get kicked on the curb by the MLG's on every match. So pls, bring back the original state of the crucible and I really would rather play the crucible beta Than deal with this new stuff. Destiny should be fun...not a job:/

Question: Is locality based on the fire team leader?
-
Like doubles, found this a big improvement. Way better then trials. Doubles and this, there was no frustration of have guns not work, or slow supers etc. saying that, when friends from other continents in the fire team, it took forever to match make and lots of lag.
-
Could you do us a big favor and stop lying. That would be great
-
this is my experience so far
-
Playing daily crucicble and classic 6v6 the lag has been terrible. Some matches almost all players are yellow or red bar. After one match I even had a message from one player saying soz for his connection. Getting a little tired of players taking no damage and / or teleporting.
-
Here is my feedback from control yesterday. Lag is mostly the same, a mixed bag. It feel any different. That said, there was a stormcaller that was able to kill my team with trance from the b flag as we spawned in near our "a" flag. He did this with 3 trances. Lightning was literally coming out of the ground. It was on an Earth map, "b" is in a tiny house, there is a long outside corridor, a bus is on the "a" flag, one heavy is in an elevated hallway and the other is above a small house (above b).
-
To the top of the forums!
-
Where's the bungie replied comment?
-
What about trials, iron banner and things where the lag actually matters :/
-
So I'm playing pvp and wrecking. Then all of a sudden I can't do damage to anyone. What gives?

After all this time you guys are still trying to fix issues and somehow think destiny 2 will be better.. You guys should of waited till you had a solid game before release and not tweak every little thing when someone starts to cry "this ain't fair that's too strong this needs a Nerf so I can win...laaaaaaaaaaag" Its a bunch of bs I like the game still somehow most of my friends will never play again because of the unfixed overprice bs its changed so much from vanilla to launch to year 2 that comparitivly it's almost not even the same game, sure as hell not the game that was first invisioned. At this rate this next destiny will be the next halo 3 or 4 trash that some people will still pick up. Instead of tweaking things every week or two wait till the games done before dropping it instead of realesing still with problems and things. As for matchmaking if it was anything like the old bungie these problems would be non exsitant.
-
As a player who consistently goes in solo, SBMM is still clearly in full effect. Constant sweat-fest. However, the lag appears to have improved. For those who think these changes suggest the new matchmaking is based on connection, it appears to be weighting connection more heavily than before but SBMM still appears to be the prime determinant of matches.
-
then they said they removed SBMM LLOOOLOOLOOLOLOLOL

Edited by Shock: 2/19/2016 4:34:30 PMI played 20 games of Control yesterday, here are some observations. For reference, my k/d is 1.68 (according to DTR) and my Control ELO is 1320 (according to guardian.gg). Average k/d of opponents - 1.44 Average k/d of teammates - 1.21 Average ELO of enemy team - 1294 Average ELO of my team - 1274 Through 20 games, I played against 7 people with negative k/d's (all were 0.9-0.99). In the same 20 games, I had 22 teammates with negative k/d's (ranging from 0.57-0.99). Through 20 games, I played against 11 people with above 2.0 k/d's, all Top 1% stats and 50 DTR. *Side note - I played Cathedral of Dusk 5 times out of 20 Bungie, these tweaks aren't working. I still cannot play with my lesser-skilled friends because they simply can't keep up with the competition being thrown their way. Crucible is not fun in it's current state. Connections were only a tiny bit better than before, but there is still red/yellow bar nonsense happening frequently. It's a shame I can't enjoy PVP with friends anymore.
-
I love pvp but connection is poo cheese. Can't play trials without lag!
-
Edited by InfestedCyborg: 2/19/2016 9:06:34 PMStill full of lagging -blam!-s. Melee hit detection still -blam!-ing shit. Time to take a long overdue break from this shit fest.
-
Deej, tell bungie they -blam!-ed up their game permanently

Edited by ADemonTeddyBear: 2/19/2016 7:58:16 PMEvery game I've played has either started off as a 4v4 or with half the lobby red bar. And most of them are in Mexico, while im in Wahington.

Played Reach PvP and it was very good, forgot how good and fun. We all want Destiny PvP to be good that's why we return in hope. It just makes me angry that they can't implement matchmaking types and models that Bungie pioneered ten years ago, it's almost like it's a new science to them. Maybe it is and this is definitely not the ground breaking team it once was...they must have stayed at Microsoft. Shame.

If I wanted to be frustrated during leisure time I'd get into following politics. Turn SBMM off please!
