Matchmaking Update - 2/17/2016

Guardians, The refinement of your competitive ecosystem continues. As you battle each other in the Crucible and discuss those experiences on the forum, we're taking stock of your reactions and sharing them with the team. Today, that same team is sharing back to you with some news on what's changing. [b]Effective Immediately[/b]: New Matchmaking settings are live in [b][u]Control[/u][/b]. We've taken additional steps to increase the emphasis on connection quality. Skill ratings will be less a factor in finding you a match. Lag will be even further diminished. Enjoying a game with your friends who are more/less skilled than you are will be easier, but your opponents will be more random, so you will stand a better chance of getting your ass kicked - or vice versa. There is still some form of protection to insulate the casual players among us from the most hardcore, but those considerations will have much less impact on the technical quality of the matchup. We have also extended Damage Referee ([url=https://www.bungie.net/7_This-Week-At-Bungie--02042016/en/News/News?aid=44307]click and scroll down to "[b]Out of Bounds[/b]" for context[/url]) to govern the impact that poor connections have on matches in [b]Clash[/b], [b]Rumble[/b], and [b]Freelance 3v3[/b]. It is still live in [b]Control[/b], where it was originally deployed. As always, your visceral real-time reactions to these changes in a live-fire exercise are more important than the math. Sound off and let us know how it feels. For now, your test-bed for the new settings is exclusive to [b]Control[/b]. Get in there and control the zones. Let us know if you'd like to see these changes deployed far and wide. It's an ongoing process, and you're the most important part of it. Thank you!   • So I continue to wonder when or even IF you guys at the all mighty Bungie are going to start taking reporting of cheating players in crucible seriously. We ran into 3 players in Iron Banner yesterday who started the game green then as soon as we were in transit went hard red instantly. While playing, they were bouncing all over the place, dancing in front of us as we shot them and they took no damage. We REPEATEDLY reported them, yet nothing EVER happens!!! Come on! Stop worrying about a stupid twitch development page and vids and start cleaning up your game. I know im wasting my time hear, as you don't really do anything that makes the game better. Keep fixing ANY little glitch you find that eases some of the burden on us, but don't worry about the people who cheating and driving away year 1 long term players.

  • Ainda tem muito legs em cada 10 partidas só 2 tenho encontrado partidas justas as demais cheio de leg e inimigos imortais mesmo com barras verdes me parece que estamos em tempos diferentes e as armas dos inimigos causam mais dano e olha que minha conexão e a cabo com 60 mega , adoro o jogo mais tem horas que desanima jogar contra leg e imortais. Vejo adversários com bem menas luz e mesmo equipamentos que o meu matando com menos tiros(augo de errado com o juiz de dano tornando o ataque dos inimigos mais poderosos) espero que isso seja melhorado para que o nosso amado jogo seja mais divertido e não para passar raiva! Abraço.

    It would be great to see a ranked matches playlist where you level like Halo based on sbmm. This would make crucible seem more important to the game and make it feel truly competitive or give it value and reason to play it, then you could have a regular playlist that doesn't effect rank and is purely for fun and based off connection. You have ranked when you want to prove yourself or level yourself and get that higher level, then you have the, "who cares, I'm just trying to have fun" playlist.

  • DeeJ, I have an honest question that I would love to have answered. I've been playing a little crucible lately just messing around with my no land beyond. I'm pretty bad but I have been noticing lag every now and then. Not just small lag, but at points where my screen freezes for a few seconds, then I see everyone stop moving. I'm able to move around a little but no one else moves. After 10 seconds the game returns to normal but I'm usually dead. I have a relatively good connection I'm just curious on what could be happening. Thanks!

        Hey DeeJ could you tell the guys who mess up with the switches that the drop rate for loot is really low please ? Btw tell them that it's pretty good matchmaking settings, nearly no lag and very close matches every time ! :)

        • Here's another idea, you have two groups of players who want different things, one wants a lag- free game with matching based on connection, the other wants level matching based on skill or lack thereof... So make two playlists! Have a connection based control list and a skill based list, and make two of everything. If people hate being spawn camped and wrecked by op players, they can join the somewhat more laggy one where they won't be dominated, and voice versa. Easy fix. Them everyone is happy, or at least not complaining about it..

          • It is still not perfect, for some reason I still do see, occasionally, people from the Middle East in my games. And geographically they are not close to me at all. But overall, connections in Control are so much better now. I still need to play more for a couple of days, but my initial impressions are very positive. Thank you guys!

              • [b]TL;DR : SBMM shouldn’t be implemented on the detriment of better players. If you want SBMM, find a way to make people want to play it in the long run by rewarding them according to their skill.[/b] To people asking for SBMM, I would like to point out several points on the issue, and specifically why it shouldn't be implemented AS IT IS. - Lag is actually a very valid point. Maybe not the vast majority of people, but those who are in the highest and lowest spectrums of players will experience it to the point of unplayability. - Next point is also one of the most important and I'm quite surprised I've only seen people talk about it once, in a video. A lot of people say something in the lines of "good players don't want SBMM because the want to keep their high k/d" and the good players (guiltily) reply "NO !!". Well, guess what, maybe they don't know how to phrase it correctly, but actually OFCOURSE THEY WANT TO KEEP THEIR HIGH K/D, but for a good reason and not just to pubstomp. Think about it for a second : in this game there is NO REWARD or PRESTIGE related to your skill in PVP. There are no cool shaders or colors or ranks, or w/e the f**k you want that would say "this guys is top tier !". So what's the closest indicator of a player's skill level relative to others ? Yeah, you guessed it : k/d ratio. Basically by implementing full SBMM for everyone, you put every player on the same ground, with same "rewards", regardless of their skill. But don't you think this good player, who played a lot and probably worked his ass off to be this good deserves a bit of love and recognition too ? Why would this 10 match blueberry have the same stats as this world class player AND same rewards ? So because RIGHT NOW, YOU suck or you play CASUALLY, you want everyone to be treated equally and have 50/50 games ? A bit selfish let me say. And how about that day you might want to play more PvP ? Won't you be a bit exhausted after playing 20 holly molly close matches in a row ? Won't you feel a bit upset after thinking like you made some improvement but not being able to qualify or quantify it because of SBMM who puts you on the same ground as everyone without any official way to measure your skill level ?? Let me tell you, for sure you’ll HATE SBMM because you won’t feel rewarded for the amount of time and efforts you put into your games. I think there are fine solutions to save the best of both worlds : 1. No SBMM at all. This is hard but true. In oldschool games this is how things happened. You enter your first game and get destroyed. You keep playing because you feel like you want to put your fingers out of your butt and improve. You face a wide variety of players : best players, worst players, average players and you learn tons from them. After some time you see your stats improving and you feel like you become good. Eventually you are the top dog every game or so. You WILL feel rewarded. You WILL feel like your efforts brought you at “this k/d” and you WILL enjoy your games. 2. “SBMM for blueberries then no SBMM”. A system that allows new players to face new players so they don’t get destroyed from the start like in the “No SBMM at all” solution. There would be like a skill indicator there or maybe a number of games played that, after reaching a point, notifies you that you are quitting the “noob sandbox” and joining the rest of the community where you will encounter a wide variety of players like in “No SBMM at all”. This is probably the most noob-friendly solution. 3. Social and Ranked playlists. Wide variety of players in social playlist where you can just enjoy your games (stats shouldn’t even be recorded). Ranked playlist with SBMM where there would be REWARD and/or PRESTIGE related to your skill level. There is NO PROBLEM WITH SBMM when you know what league you belong to. In a ranked system, you don’t even care about k/d because you might be an amazing teammate who makes risky (will get you killed), but wise decisions. Stats won’t even matter, because you sure as f**k know that that bronze player with 1.5k/d (maybe grinding to silver) will not stand a single chance versus this diamond 0.98k/d player, even if he plays by tapping his di** on the controller. But this diamond player in the silver bracket and he might just “run out of medals”. Sorry for the wall of text.

                • Worldwide servers rather than continental ones is the big issue, how can you realistically believe that connection isn't going to drop during a match, if your sat in the UK or elsewhere playing against people logged on in Australia, America, South Africa, Japan etc Record breaking profits........... but don't want to spend any of it improving the game for the players who made you them, enjoy your pensions bungie

                • Been playing control, and if anything it's is worse than before in some matches. Do you STILL not understand that people are using programs to induce lag and packet loss? Netlimiter, UDPUni and others...I can tell. Do something about those people. Get rid of them. You keep saying you are fixing it, but how can explain how you cannot fix it? Because it ISNT you...never was.

                  I joined one game and I noticed something strange. DeeJ warned us that uneven matchups were an issue, but once again I felt like the enemy team was a bunch of pros and I was on the team with knuckleheads. It was distinctive. I'm starting to doubt they're making the changes they're saying. Maybe they're trying to psych us out and see if they can call us out on something. The connections seemed fine. But the fact matchups are uneven likely has more to do with the premade team meta atmosphere than the fact that matchmaking algorithms are getting wonky. I'm seriously starting to question whether or not this game [i]can[/i] get better. It feels like what's wrong with competitive play is part of what's wrong with Destiny.

                • [b][i][u]OMG[/u][/i][/b]--- I don't even know what to say any more!!! As a daily (usually 3+hrs/day) PvP player, I'm totally lost. I saw the matches turn to śhit after TTK dropped. I saw them diminish further in December and learned of the push towards SBMM. I realized SB is a stupid way to match and essentially promoted lag. I was ecstatic when I saw this post about reverting back to CBMM. I jumped in and it's [b]freaking[/b] worse!!! -supers not registering -melee's not registering -shot while behind rocks/walls And my personal favorite[b]------------->[/b] -unloading on a "green bar" facing the wall, getting shot by him with a "Patch-A" shotgun (while still facing the wall mind you), and the aśśhole flew vertically up the wall like Spider-Man. [b][i]FREAKING SPIDER-MAN!!![/i][/b] Sorry for the expletives but I'm losing my freaking mind over this trash. I've increased my internet through my IP to their top-tier plan, I've given my ps4 a "static ip", I've DMZ'd the connection... Wtf else can I do on my end?!? [spoiler]If anyone has a free moment and can locate me a mental hospital in Western New York, I'd appreciate it because at this point I've honestly lost my mind.[/spoiler]

                    02/20/16 07:17 AM PST First game of control of the day was EXTREMELY laggy, people teleporting, doors closed but people went through it and vice versa… Shots do register most of the time though, that's good. But really a ton of lag, it wasn't enjoyable. Second game : Fix it. It worked yesterday and it all went to shit today. Just revert back to yesterday matchmaking, I don't know what you have done but I feel like I'm not gonna be able to enjoy my Saturday and it is honestly getting old. 9:10 AM PST Third game: ok, not too much lag…

                  • Scrolling down the recent posts and seems like I am not alone. Can we please just revert to the MM the way it was before the December update? That way you guys can focus on addressing the multitude of other issues people were actually concerned about instead of driving away your loyal PvPers with pointless tweaks and fine tuning.

                      [b] TLDR; There is one thing I hate a million times more than getting matched against higher skill player, LAG. I can't learn from lag. [/b] [spoiler]Ok so casuals cannot enjoy a game against high skill players, I get that but a high skill player doesn't enjoy playing against casuals either… So they will both be unhappy with the matchmaking if it is based on connection. Casuals and high skill players don't like lag… So they will both be unhappy with the matchmaking if it is skill based. However, both casuals and high skill players enjoyed the crucible has it was before December. We don't know what you did, we don't know if you even did anything, but at that point in time it all went to crap. It got worse and worse over time, probably because people don't play anymore… The last time I played with my casual friends was in December and it was VOG… Then they moved on to other games. Mostly Halo 5… Since those casuals friends are very competitive halo players whom both speedrun and play pvp competitively, I didn't join them because I don't like halo 5… So I stuck with Destiny, for months and months and recently I noticed how it went down more and more as times goes… With call of duty released it hit the bottom. You aren't fooling anyone, people moved on to other games because they got bored… Now it feels like you are trying to satisfy all the Christmas noobs, they don't have fun when they get crushed to death. I didn't have fun in the crucible before the taken king, I didn't even play destiny because of that… Then it was great for months and I learned and got better at the game. I now am neither bad nor good at the game but there is one thing I hate a million times more than getting matched against higher skill player, LAG. I can't learn from lag.[/spoiler]

                      People with lag still rules this game, its impossible to kill. Last night on trials a guy was last guardian standing and we kill ourselves at same time. He died only after the countdown and the game put a victory to his team, thats horrible. The matchmaking on trials is so unfair, teams with 3 skillled guys that goes to lighthouse every week keep destroying me and my friends that never did it.
