Matchmaking Update - 2/17/2016

Guardians, The refinement of your competitive ecosystem continues. As you battle each other in the Crucible and discuss those experiences on the forum, we're taking stock of your reactions and sharing them with the team. Today, that same team is sharing back to you with some news on what's changing. Effective Immediately: New Matchmaking settings are live in Control. We've taken additional steps to increase the emphasis on connection quality. Skill ratings will be less a factor in finding you a match. Lag will be even further diminished. Enjoying a game with your friends who are more/less skilled than you are will be easier, but your opponents will be more random, so you will stand a better chance of getting your ass kicked - or vice versa. There is still some form of protection to insulate the casual players among us from the most hardcore, but those considerations will have much less impact on the technical quality of the matchup. We have also extended Damage Referee (click and scroll down to "Out of Bounds" for context) to govern the impact that poor connections have on matches in Clash, Rumble, and Freelance 3v3. It is still live in Control, where it was originally deployed. As always, your visceral real-time reactions to these changes in a live-fire exercise are more important than the math. Sound off and let us know how it feels. For now, your test-bed for the new settings is exclusive to Control. Get in there and control the zones. Let us know if you'd like to see these changes deployed far and wide. It's an ongoing process, and you're the most important part of it. Thank you! UPDATE (02/18/2016): Matchmaking tuning has been revised to prioritize finding people who are close to your locality in the interest of further reducing lag.

I don't think any of the changes implemented have helped. I would go as far as to say it's made game play worse for me. It's almost like my connection to the servers was downgraded to match everyone else and entire lobbies were red barring. Finding people close to our locality doesn't necessarily mean a chance at less lag.

  • My experience in the crucible has improved. The mercy rule has not had to be implemented yet, the matches seem to be closer right until the very end, overall I have had a much better experience in the crucible than before. I look forward to this new algorithm being applied across the playlists. Thank you for your hard work!

  • DeeJ your techs have dropped the ball on lag for the entire run of this game....having a red bar (poor connection) or two on your team ensures at least one player runs like GOD refer to my 32 and 4 where I melee a stormcalling warlock out of his super and continue my reign of terror...your techs suck a fixing things and anything they "fix" breaks other things.

  • Will the new updates also be applied to ToO, the update does say all Crucible playlists?

  • This may be an ignorant suggestion, but could you simply boot the lag player(s) from the match? By not booting laggy players it enables lag switchers to operate and makes crucible unplayable, not enjoyable or fair for everyone else.

(I know, I know.. I'm tardy to the party. But just wanted to give a more "up-to-date" comment on this, since it's a problem still being worked on) Last Iron Banner event, I played every single day all day and had no problem with lag. I usually don't play the crucible, but I'd consider myself a casual pvper. This Iron Banner event..... was horrible. During the day (EST) from morning till about 3-4 my connection would be perfect, other players' connections would be perfect, we were equally matched teams as far skill and connection. During the day I was SLAYING through matches with pretty decent k/d ratios. As soon as 3 or 4 pm hit, lag hit me and other players like your dad's fart would hit your face. Thankfully I was never matched against or in a team with players who were taking advantage of lag like other people were explaining before me. But I have to say that all the other problems people are having were going on throughout the iron banner. I play Destiny for hours and hours. I especially enjoy the iron banner and other events. This IB event though, I only played 3 or 4 days of last week from the day it started because it was too frustrating after having amazing connection and such a great time with these fireteams during the day and then tons of laggers come in, laggers who take advantage, etc. But my main problems are as followed: - hand cannons (and other weapons that are shitty) being fired over 40ft.. 50ft away killing you in one hit -being killed when you're behind walls and rocks. This was probably one of my biggest frustrations. I know this is a true problem and not me thinking I'm behind it when I'm not, because i tested it when I equipped my sword for a 3 person view. I was being killed through walls and rocks -spawning into a match with "good" connection that the bar indicates, then 2 minutes in it's showing that me and/or other players have very poor connection. Though I will say that there are times where my lag doesn't give me an advantage OR disadvantage, but more times than not it's a problem. -screen blacking out almost every match or every other match, come back into the game dead (was out so long that I don't even see on the corner of the screen who killed me and how), can't shoot or move, other players around me freeze and 3 sec later I'm alone, etc. -shooting tf out of players, you know damn well you killed them dead, and no damage shows.. they kill you in one hit. and either they don't die or they die at least 30 sec after you die -guns that normally would NEVER kill you in 1-2 hits kill you (I mentioned this but it's so upsetting). I'm not one of the super hard-hardcore gamers who get down to a science what the right weapons to use in which pvp match in the crucible, but I know enough about this game and the weapons to know that shouldn't be happening, damnit. I agree with the people saying it should be skill-based and the people who say it should be connection-based. For someone who loves having fun but at the same time loves seeing a high k/d ratio, I don't think there's really a middle ground for this. It sucks so hard being over 305 and every person on your match-made fireteam is below 300, while the other fire team is 305 and above. They're completely wrecking your teammates while you're pretty much a lone wolf. I don't know how many times I've seen "strength of the pack" or other one-man army badges and stuff come up on my screen. Make the lower lvls get more experienced by demolishing them, sure, that's how I learned when I was young to get better. But it's not fun playing with high lvl players who don't play fair. And I'm not talking about players who only play the crucible while still having fun. I mean the ones who just prey on any "weak" player whether it be light lvl or connection. But at the same time, connection is beyond a huge issue for almost everyone. Before these connection/matchmaking "changes" were made, there was no problem with lagging. Ever. At least from what I remember. It was as smooth as a baby's bottom. And now we have either: 1) a couple laggers on one fireteam against perfect connection players singling out and targeting the laggers to make it easier for them to win, or 2) several laggers taking advantage of their lag (being jerks) and teasing/-blam!-ing with the other players, happening almost every single match (after 3pm EST for me). Now, Crimson Doubles... That was the -blam!-ing best. Rarely had lag, rarely played with anyone who was lagging, evenly matched with both connection and skill, super -blam!-ing fun to play. It was really a joy. And after I got only a couple of the rewards in just a couple days, I wasn't even playing for them anymore. It was just fun. I don't really want this comment to be up for debate with other players cause I don't care that much to do that. I just wanted to express the very serious concerns about our gameplay. You know it's bad when og players and players who play for LONG hours get off for days at a time. After this long of people complaining, for most people this isn't a "it goes both ways" kind of deal. For a lot of us, only one way is the problem, and that's coming from Bungie's end. I love this game but the matchmaking system should've been left alone in my player opinion. This is the worst lag I've ever had on Destiny. Ever. And I'm super disappointed. Edit: went through my stats for clash and forgot to mention that the many times when my screen blacks out, before it does so I know I've killed at least 7 people and when I return I have 0 kills. And this will happen with at most 5 min left of the match.

    • Nothing has changed. And I am still spawning into games where a team is down by 10,000 and only has two people on the team, constantly spawning into supers and heavy. Thanks Bungie, real great way to treat the community.

    • As a casual player of pvp I have found that the sbmm works it makes the game more fun rather than facing an entire team of elites with 4-5 KD ratio, yes high level players are moaning that they can't keep there KD ratio errr I could not care less ! You want a high KD ratio earn it against people of the same skill level as you. and as for needing the KD ratio for prestige how about introducing league tables ? People say these games are becoming sports right ? I don't think you would have a wet behind the ears lightweight up against a heavy weight world champion ? But that's what you guys want !. And should cruciable go that way again I for one will again hang up my pvp kit and ignore that part of the game entirely. As for saying we're selfish for wanting competitive matches well sorry for wanting to enjoy the game I paid for and pay monthly ps plus to play !. I know several truly great players out there who point blank refuse to go to cruciable because of year one issue with getting seriously stomped by an elite player. As for likening the game to COD a specifically unbalanced high price 1st person pvp shooter where you can pay to improve your skills and upgrade speed and with a generally poor campaign thrown in ? What the hell ? Are you guys lost ? Are you looking for battlefield or battlefront. Give us new and casual players a chance and Mabey one day you will be facing us as a elite player but keep pushing bungie to allow you to stomp us we will vote with our feet and you won't have paper targets any more. And then you will still lose your treasured KD ratio and the game you claim to love.

      • I don't have the best connection, but it is more than required for this game ( or any xbone game). Most people talk about how great their net is, but have no understanding of how it works though. I finally convinced a friend, who always lags despite his"amazing connection," to forward his ports and walked him through the process, and he was blown away by the difference. My point is, you're making great strides in the right direction with connection issues, but most players know nothing and assume it's not their end causing lag problems. Some people do actually try to cheat the system, but usually only show up in trials or banner, where there are actually rewards for winning. Please do not match based only on connection though. Great idea: put anyone who reaches lighthouse in separate matchmaking. Did you never wonder why only the same people get there every time? They just keep playing, guarding the gates and squashing noobs who get too close to winning. Its not fair for them and they usually quit after that. On that note, I played doubles with a friend who recently got Destiny, and every game he had played was against nearly 320 players. The level didn't affect him, but he had one legendary piece of gear, and the opponents had year1 elemental primaries, icebreakers, etc. He had no chance. You have all the pieces of the puzzle, keep trying and you'll get them each in the right places.

        • So simple yet ultimately ignored but why in the world am I forced to play with laggers? I bought my own modem, pay a lot for cable internet, ensure i have open nat, ports forwarded etc. And whats with the green bars now? Laggers have them too. I can tell when someone lags regardless of their connection color. I can tell they're not taking damage then 2 minutes later they're red barring. But again why? Let them suffer with each other. I want to play with good connection players like me only. Ill wait in the lobby. I think everyone would. I sincerely believe that bungie doesnt play this game at home because if they realized how utterly frustrating it is then it would be correcte . Im also not buying any more expansions, destiny 2 et . My reasoning is once bitten twice shy. In almost 18 months its still not been addressed appropriately. I refuse to start playing and getting sucked in again only to be let down by lag. Fine product but you really forgot about this when you started.

        • Not sure how this works, still getting placed into teams that are already down by 10000 points before i even arrive on site, it sounds like they are trying to make iron banner more like trials, casual players placed aginst the worlds elite, thanks for the fairness bungie

            •
UPDATE (02/18/2016): Matchmaking tuning has been revised to prioritize finding people who are close to your locality in the interest of further reducing lag.
Ok, so how does this work when my fireteam is in three different states? Is "locality" in this sense an area of 1000 miles of me, or my own city? As for lag, the last iron banner was horrible after the updates. I saw nothing but negative reviews about it, and then someone at Bungie said the reviews were mostly positive. I finally see a couple of positive reviews in these comments, but still, it's generally negative. You can't please everyone, so I'm not sure who you're trying to please now. Skill based matching works better, hands down. Lag comes into play with the person's skill in many cases...someone who is lagging on their end will be unable to make the shots. And someone that has a periodic downturn for a few seconds might get rated with a worse connection and therefore get put with poorer performing connections. There's no perfect solution, but I don't think you're going in the right direction. The breaking point for me today after several similar scenarios was seeing a blade dancer with his shields gone take zero damage while I unloaded half my auto rifle into him. He was moving, so the game was sending data to me (and it wasn't just the lagging last direction of travel movement...he was changing directions). I never saw these problems prior to the moment you started doing connection based matches. So, I will be hanging up Destiny for a while. I enjoyed the Crucible from the very beginning, but I can't take it like it is anymore. Meles not registering, grenades not doing any damage, etc. I can tell when I miss a shot, and I can handle being outgunned by heavy ammo or a ranged scout rifle. That's fine. But, when damage doesn't register....the frustration is just not worth it. I'll play something relaxing. I was just about sold on some emotes, too, but I won't be spending the money now.

Go ahead and take a look at the last few matches I played today on this account on my warlock. I believe this account has around a 1.5 - 1.6 k/d overall currently (nothing special at all but I used to hold over a 2.0 on my warlock back in year one) and over a 3 million medal score. Anyway, red bars everywhere and I could barely hold a 1.0... it was crazy (except for the my last game I think). It's not my connection either... I don't believe (at least I can't recall) that I've ever red barred and I have quite a few crucible matches played. Also, I have a Netduma and I was monitoring the connections and I was getting matched all over the world. One game even had a player with an 800ms ping. That's a bit ridiculous. Now, take a look at the match I just played on my father's account here (he has a 0.6 k/d): https://www.bungie.net/en/Legend/PGCR?instanceId=4671980485&characterId=2305843009222408063 It's night and day. I also got my first "We Ran Out Of Medals" in this game. I don't believe I even have that on my account. I pretty much never complain but I gotta say, I do not notice any change that leads me to believe that connection is being favored more than skill. In fact, if I were to never read these updates I would never know that anything even changed (if it even did). Edit: Screen cap of matchmaking this morning... http://i65.tinypic.com/2s9cacx.jpg

Lag is better and I'm truly thankful for that. BUT 1. Lots of the games are now lopsided blowouts. It's not really appealing to the warrior ethic to Become Legend when you are on either side of the blowout. 2. The Mercy Rule seems to have been repealed or converted into a Mercy Wish. This makes #1 worse. Like, I was in a few games where my team was losing by nearly 15,000 points and the damn games just went on and on and friggin' on. 3. Lots of folks are bailing if their team begins to lose. This makes #1 worse. In two games today everyone else on my team quit and it was me versus 6. It's kind of funny when you get hit by three supers, two rockets, a machine gun and three grenades at the same time. But it's only funny once. I played a few games where we had 3 people versus 6. New guys would drop in, look around, snort and quit. But hey, the connection was as solid as wedding night wood. Bungie, there has to be a middle ground.

                • This game is basically done for. The only reason I still play is because I don't have the money to buy either a Xbox One or more 360 games. Once I get a job again and start getting money I'll probably stop playing UNLESS this spring PvE update is worth it. If it is not I'll just sell my destiny discs and delete every DLC to clear up space for other things that would be worth my time. Honestly I really want this spring update to bring all strikes to year 2 as well as atheon and crota, however they have not released anything other than the increased level cap, most year 1 exotics are becoming year 2 (excluding Ice Breaker, Gjallarhorn, and Thorn, which they stated if they did bring them back they were going to be basically useless which I'm glad that they said that and hopefully will keep that as a thing because I do not want to see any of them come back with their original stats because of the fact that people will pull the same shit they did in year 1 that made them say they are not coming back which for two of them was they were required for anyone to take you into the raid), a few new exotics, and more PvE content.

                  • So I continue to wonder when or even IF you guys at the all mighty Bungie are going to start taking reporting of cheating players in crucible seriously. We ran into 3 players in Iron Banner yesterday who started the game green then as soon as we were in transit went hard red instantly. While playing, they were bouncing all over the place, dancing in front of us as we shot them and they took no damage. We REPEATEDLY reported them, yet nothing EVER happens!!! Come on! Stop worrying about a stupid twitch development page and vids and start cleaning up your game. I know im wasting my time hear, as you don't really do anything that makes the game better. Keep fixing ANY little glitch you find that eases some of the burden on us, but don't worry about the people who cheating and driving away year 1 long term players.
