No. I don't see why people just take the route that Jonas Salk did when he discovered the first polio vaccine.

I can just imagine in the future that someone finds the cure for all cancers, and then they just release it to the public for free use. That would pretty much shut down a sizable chunk of industry.

In a perfect world. My girlfriend is a P2 at UCONN's PharmD program and I'm in the process of applying for med schools all across the US. I have a personal interest in working towards viable treatments for Alzheimer's and in honor of my late grandfather if I made any significant accomplishment at all I wouldn't even think about monetizing it.
