The Minimum Wage According to Economists

So what is the right minimum wage according to (not conservatives) economists? No minimum wage, of course. What is the value of labor in your eyes? What are other solutions to unemployment, underemployment and poverty?

  • Not actually a horrible idea. But this is also a massive problem and I don't think that the government would be able to do so. The reason is that in order for all minimum wage to be dropped off, the government will have to TRUST employers. They would have to trust individuals to not pay all their workers a horrible wage. Say $.75/hr. We need to find a way to create something like a minimum wage, but have exceptions that can increase or decrease the wage, based on the employer's ability, the employee's ability, the business' needs, etc etc. So we have a minimum balanced on a sort of scale. Disadvantages are put on one end to lower the wage and advantages on another to increase. We don't need any complicated background checks. For example, let's say this particular individual has diabetes and a young child. These are both things that may not directly interfere with their work ethic and are great reasons for why they should have a higher wage. Get them to get some note or document saying "yes, this individual so and so does have diabetes and needs insulin" boom. Wage increase. And for children, access the hospital again and get a document pertaining to their child's birth. It says on the certificate the biological father's or mother's name. The company won't access them for privacy rights but the individual could provide proof to why they may need an increase. And the company provides proof to why they may have to lower their wage. Inexperience, bad work ethic, previous problems, stamina, etc etc. These are all things that are solvable problems and this person can work to increase their wage by so much by eliminating these factors

    • I'd say minimum wage should be at least $12-$14 an hour. Doing something like that would probably only make this inflation crap worse.
