Family are the people you get together for Christmas with, who you kinda feel an obligation to see even if you don't really like them. May or may not be blood relatives.
Friends are the people you choose to spend your time with because you just like them that much.
Family is someone I have blood or legal ties to. I might love them, hate them, or think they're okay.
A friend is someone whom I chosen to be part of my life and feel an affinity for. Though I may love them, hate them, or think they're okay as well.
A friend is someone you spend time with, and you genuinely enjoy their company.
Family is someone you trust above all others, you're willing to help no matter the cost (and they would do the same for you), and you'd be distraught if something happened to them.
That's sort of hard to define, actually. It's a sense of trust and loyalty. You'd do anything for this person and you know that they would do anything for you. You stick with them through the good and the bad.
Family isn't just biological and true friendship is a rare thing.
